FFL is nowhere near the "old FFL", its modern army branch, not different than any other today.
In first 5 years you will be delployed in Africa, but there aren't anymore action there, mostly just patrolling, arresting smugglers and people who dig mines illegally, or you will defend the space station.

My unit is actually the recon for Cav Scouts. We're supposed to go where their transportation can't. We're the only infantry unit within the bat. They're fucking cool, I haven't seen a lot of them be assholes or the like but of course there's the fuckin weirdo here and there. Off duty, most of them are car-heads (go figure), around where I'm at they all drive lifted F150's and shit like that.
If you served near infantry, they're basically like that. My only biggest problem with them is that they love distinguishing themselves from us because our entire combat arms within bat (excluding us 11b) is 19D. Even when I'm talking to someone within bat and say, "Yeah I'm in Cav," they'll be like, "Oh you're a 19D?" and then I'll say, "Nah, I'm 11B,", then it's "You're Recon, not Cav, man,"

After some research I came to the conclusion that it would honestly be better to become a criminal and end up in prison than join the legion. You get treated like a dog in the legion, the French gov sucks, and there is seriously no benefit to joining at all. Most ex-legionnaires are disabled rejects.

i did a report on the FFL during my senior year of HS, (now senior in college), i'd say go for it if you have absolutely nothing going for you. You get to be given a new name and french citizenship which will allow you to buy property is based places like french polynesia.
They will teach you french, but i recommend you learn as much as you can now because they will get tired after about a month of giving language instruction and just PT you until you fuckin die.
Military experience is not needed but you DO need to be very physically fit to survive in the legion and to excel in it. Think like US marines.
I can't really remember but i think all FFL officer are native french but all enlisted including NCO/SNCO's are foreigners.

Tried to join about four years ago.
Made it the end of selection but never got selected.
Almost all of the people selected had prior military experience. The only ones selected without prior military experience were guys who could speak multiple languages (there was four). Only two guys with no skills were selected, that was a while ago though, they have apparently ramped up on recruiting.
Non of the five Americans were selected, despite one being a former USMC Sniper and two Airborne soldiers, they got a hard time off the Corporals.
I didn't pass and was told to wait five years by a corporal because they erase your records after five years.

75th Ranger regiment: Have an amazing work ethic and are not fuckups like regular enlisted men. They're were used as reinforcements/backup for the Navy SEALs during the raid on bin Laden. They're pretty much the best of the best for the infantry and the military uses them for battles that NEED to be won. While SEALs are used mainly for covert missions and black ops.
Marines are similar to Rangers but they don't have to be Airborne qualified. Marines are pretty much discount Army Rangers, but still above every other form of infantry in the military.

Royal Marine Commandos and Paras (Brit Airborne) are tier 2, you can even join them from civilian (no prior military experience).
Navy SEALS are tier 1, SAS are tier 1. Just look it up instead of making stuff up and guessing.
Rangers and Marine Recon are tier 2, though in the US you need to have served at least 2 years to join.
