It wasn't that hard to get a job down there between 06-2012 through Raytheon. Anything from being a janitor, cook, mechanic, carpenter, welder, plumber, fucking everything, even bartenders were needed. Summer tours were fun, but still cold. Tours lasted 6 months and generally you would return home with about $40K. Was even in Christchurch on my way back home from the ice when the big earthquake happened. You got time off to go explore and do whatever you wanted on weekends. and after work. I even took a snowmobile out to Mount Erebus and took some crystals I found in one of the old lava tubes. Days after work were spent moastly at the bar or out skiing. Best part was there were actually people around, and the town was nice sized (about 3,000 or so people). lots of penguins and seals. Got a few sweet pictures next to emperor penguins and the little macaroni ones. Access around the base was a bit restricted, but if you wanted to take a snowcat and go drive around the ice, nobody gave two shits.
During the one winter tour I did it was fucking depressing. Only about 300 people total stayed on the base during winter, good portion of the time there was no sunlight and extreme cold (-70-100°F, not counting wind chill). Most of the stores stayed closed and it was hard to get good supplies (booze and smokes/chew were gold). Work consisted of basically keeping the facility running and power up until the scientists came back in the springtime.
I would go back for another Summer Tour, but never a winter one again. Fuck that.
