Saddam himself was not a nice guy but then again you need a guy like saddam in that part of the world. He was pretty secular and saw himself as the bringer in of neo Mesopotamia. He was interested in the ancient history of iraq (summer, ancient cities of Ur etc)

He was getting out of control. He was brought to heal a bit over Kuwait but then ultimately thumbed his nose at his American masters.
