Secular military of Turkey is responsible for preventing islamization per Ataturk's order, every time the muslims start trying to shift the laws towards sharia, the military takes over and kicks the current politicians out, then holds a new election, has happened like 5 times in Turkey's past.
Erdogan has been islamizing and supporting Isis, has been purging many of the secular generals and replacing them with islamists, it was now or never for another reset.
Too many of the leaders were purged and replaced, which prevented the full military from intervening, which caused the coup to fail.
Expect Erdogan to implement full sharia, and a complete Pakistan 2.0 within the next few years.
