You're creating a false dychotomy between protecting the reality or the principle. What I'm saying is that the principle often is grounded in reality and logically derived from it. If it's not, then it's invalid and is not a principle in the first place (even if it's recognized as such), but by acting ethically i.e. "protecting the reality" (awkward wording on your part but we'll have to deal with it) you'll still be fulfilling what's right in the light of another principle which actually can be derived from natural law.
Western philosophy departments used to be a place of greatest intellectual juggernauts in the world. For example in the same lecture hall I'm sitting right now Karl Popper was writing his evolutionary theory of knowledge work. They may have regressed in recent years, but they're still on the very top.
