Water, food, weapons, ammo, tools, barter, wealth storage.
In that order.
Depending on your finances, a good start is about 10-15% in PHYSICAL precious metals.
Food should be something you already enjoy, with a high shelf life, and high caloric value.
Water can be a combination of storage, such as a waterbob, food grade drums, etc, and filters such as katadyn and lifestyle etc.
Weapons should be something easy to find, reliable and with prevalent ammo. AR is fine. 9mm is fine.
Don't forget tools. If something breaks, you need to know how to fix it, or you're fucked.
Barter is anything you have tons of to trade. Keep in mind, if you trade a lot, people will assume you have more.
This might sound gay, but get into extreme couponing or convince your girlfriend (hand) to do it.
You can fill a room with random toiletries like soaps, razors, detergent, dry goods, etc for nearly free. Just double up all coupons and wait for a sale. There are a bunch of apps that streamline the process.
Wealth storage is usually physical gold if you think stability will return, and silver is useful of you're poorer than most.

Just pick up a few extra tings every time you go to the store. If you see cases of bottled water on sale pick up a couple and just put them away under the bed or something. Keep at it and it will start to add up. Build it up from a 2 week supply, to a 3 month supply, to a 1 year supply.
And to stress, buy things you will eat. Rotate your preps by eating the older ones and putting the new stuff in the back, otherwise you are going to end up with a bunch of spoiled shit in a few years. You want to basically build up a part of your house to be your own little market that you use and restock slowly but regularly.

As for food, cans of soup, beef stew, chili, ravioli, etc. are perfect for short term storage. They are fine to eat for a few years past their expiration.

Unless you have no neighbors for miles, they'll hear the shots when you hunt. And to go hunting requires that you leave your defended area, which also makes anyone staying at your homestead less safe, since you're splitting up from them.
As for the tool, I think suffering with .22LR for hunting most small/medium game makes a lot more sense. Quieter, cheaper, lighter, much easier to carry in addition to a capable fighting rifle, compared to a shotgun. You might have to wait for a still shot, but the advantages are extreme.

Canned food is the way to go. It doesn't need to be light weight unless you plan on running around with it which you shouldn't. You'll defend your home and as long as you have space to stockpile food it should be no problem.
I like spam even though it's high in sodium. A little meat goes a long way compared to shit like canned corn or chef boyardee, won't get you full on one can. Jars of peanut butter/jams pack a punch to fight off hunger as well.
Stockpile toilet paper, lighters, cheap alcohol can be used to burn and other useful items that can be traded.

Make some hard tack. It's super easy to make, cheap as dirt and lasts as long as you can keep the moisture and bugs out. A batch of hard tack you make right now will still be edible at the end of your lifetime.

If you're in a static location, you'll have access to water, or die. So, if we assume you have access to water, the advantages of canned food are meaningless, and they last like 1/8 as long as dry food, or less. Not to mention way more expensive per calorie than dry grains/beans.
I don't think wasting money on TP makes a lot of sense compared to a cloth and shock mixture. If you must have paper, try to collect the phonebooks that everyone throws away anymore. Crinkle the sheets and smooth them out 2-3 times and it becomes soft enough to wipe with.

it works, I've done it numerous times. with fresh bleach it's 2-3 drops per liter.
the problem with liquid bleach is that it goes bad in about 3 months if it's opened, or 6 months if it's sealed. the chlorine gas leaches out. That's why I'd recommend pool shock, boiling, or some form of iodine.
