EMT's and Fire Fighters have been shot at literally by the people whom they are trying to help.
Not to say that there are never overreactions or mistakes, but frequently the sensationalist stories leave out the context and precursors when a "sick black man is shot in his own home by police just because he called 911 for medical help."
For example:
Cop responds to a call for medical help. Frequently in bad areas, the cops will go in before the paramedics and EMT's.
There have been numerous instances of EMT's being shot by someone in the house when responding to a medical 911 call.
Now let's say that the patient is in diabetic shock and keeps a gun by his bed. He is disoriented and delusional due to the medical condition.
The cop comes up the steps to check on the patient before the EMT's get there. The patient, delirious, thinks it is a home intruder and points his gun at the cop.
The cop shoots him.

This almost exact thing happened a couple months ago. Except in this case FD arrived before Police. They didn't think they needed PD to clear the scene for them. They made entry to the building, attempted to make contact with the patient, and in the end one of the FF ended up getting shot and killed. If memory serves correct the patient was AMS from hypoglycemia.

It's really funny when it comes time for them to test for NREMT though. The place I went through hosts NREMT for the basic practical. The city department has their own EMT course run in the same place as the school's. The difference between the students from the school's class and the city firefighters class is hilarious. Some of the students that came through the firefighter class failed the airway station because they couldn't even figure out how to put a regulator on an O2 tank.
