There are three main types
State schools, Private (also called Public) schools and Academies.
Comprehensives are state schools. They are run by local councils and the department for education using taxpayer funding.

When the government talks about free schools they generally mean academies. I was an Infantry Officer for a time and despite serving in a very prestigious Regiment, we still had our fair share of oddballs.
There was one man who simply couldn't wash. He failed to keep clean. His kit was usually in good order, but he had a very distinct stench. Combine that with the heat and it was similar to the smell you get inside a leg cast after it has been on for 8 weeks. Stale, cheesy and pungent.

If you can afford it, you send them to private schools (the best private schools are called "public schools" in the UK, kek).
If you're able to move into the catchment area of good grammar schools, then you do so.
Otherwise you just send them to the local comprehensive.

private schools are a waste of money. The benefit is you would meet a toff and hopefully get good connections with the wealthy, but just revise hard enough to get into Oxford/Cambridge and youre fine

If they have loadsamoney and want them to have gay molestation experiences in their formative years/become a politician or rugby player they send them to Public
If the kid is smart and there's one in the area they send them to Grammar
If they're poor, thick or have no other option (ie. most people) they send them to comprehensive or an academy
