This country used to just have consumption tax and tariffs to run the government. I really want to go back to that maybe even minus the tariffs to keep government so small they can't do much and have to be wise and prudent on how they spend the money. If they tried bumping up the consumption tax beyond a reasonable amount then second hand buying (stuff like yard sales) and the black market would starve the beast and they might not be able to afford to crack down on it.
I don't know much about it, it's not what I went to school for but it does make sense when you operate on the goal of keeping government small. No wonder so many rich people stash their wealth in tax havens, our corporate tax has to be one of the highest in the world.
