He openly threatened to dismantle the CIA after bay of pigs, apparently not understanding their capabilities and desperation- hell they considered him a national security threat. He had LBJ sitting there as his VP, who knew he would not be on the ticket. How he slept on one of the most corrupt politicians of all time (LBJ) is baffling. Not only did he sleep on him, but RFK was actively hostile toward him and his considerable ties to very powerful people. All around Kennedy was blind to the situation his well intentioned policies created, and did not posses the requisite strategic capabilities to do what he was doing. Perhaps if he had been a dozen years older or so, he would have understood how to do good as a leader strategically, without creating a literal stable of nasty and capable enemies.
