As far off as complete automation of low level manufacturing jobs is, it still makes more sense to push forward towards that than try and bring every manufacturing job and train a generation of people to perform those jobs and STILL have those people have to go out of work once their jobs are automated.

We compete by working smarter, not harder. Still keep some labor/technicians but have machines do the heavy lifting.

The problem most Trumpchumps don't want to acknowledge is the fact that if companies are forced to come back to a country where it's more expensive to do business, they're gonna find ways to cut costs, whether it's in the quality of the product, the wages paid, or even the number of jobs created. We're not gonna have millions of manufacturing jobs flooding back to the states, as most of them will be automated with a tiny fraction of human labor input.

We're reaching a point where low skill human labor simply can't compete with the cost effectiveness of machines. If a company has to relocate back to America to save shekels, why not automate every possible job you can? Lower long term costs, lower turnover rates on employees, and less people to train and insure. Yes, manufacturing plants will still need some human input, but most of those jobs will be in maintenance and administration/management.

Western workers will never compete with cheaper workers abroad who can do the same work. Even with trade barriers, that just means more expensive inefficient work domestically.
The only reasonable option is raising the level of capital to the point a single western worker can outperform a tremendous number of workers abroad, but that would imply very few required jobs, though an increase in the number of workers in automation.
