The US and China are within a few months of warfare over the South China Sea.
The Permanent Court for Arbitration in the Hague has just made its ruling on China's activities off the shores of Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia. The ruling went way beyond what most people expected it would. Not only has China's "9 Dash Line" claim been rejected, but the court also ruled that China is in violation of International Law, and militarily occupying the sovereign territory of the Philippines.
This means the Philippines is already justified in using military force to eject the Chinese occupational forces from its territorial waters. It also means the Philippines may very well use force to resist further Chinese encroachment on its sovereign waters. Should China do so, in light of this ruling, the Philippines would be justified in activating its defense treaty with the United States.
