On Thursday I'm going to my local recruitment office.

I want to serve my country as my grandfather (navy: Cold War), great-grandfather (army: WW2), and great-great-grandfather (army: Boer War & WW1) did before me.

Should I join the Army or the Navy?

I think I've already reached my own decision but I'm interested to hear alternative arguments for either.

Possibly relevant: 18, Male, /fit/, 6"1'
>>
>>80772088

Navy you'll get called a bumder and get stuck at HMS Collingwood for an eternity. But you'll make loads of shipmates and all have sex.

Army you'll get called a nonce because they're all nonces. I advise you join the tug of war team because you'll get out of doing anything.

But jobs for life. Both will see you a good life. Both with give you a decent set of skills. Up to you.
>>
>>80772413
In the navy, roughly how much time would you say is spent at sea vs how much is spent in a dock or base?

Either way, match up your career prospects and have an idea of what you want to do whilst serving.

That actually sounds pretty comfy tobehonest.

I am leaning towards navy because the stories my Grandad tells about his service are great and I want to gain experiences like that.

Career prospects are pretty much non-existent.

I'm considering a shipwright apprenticeship if I fail to get into either.

Qualifications from college were good, but mostly irrelevant.
>>
Ex RN submariner, ignore flag, on holiday.Training is easy but takes ages. Once you get on a unit sea time can vary. If you end up gold crew you will do a lot. If you are 2 crew its a bit better. I left as man power was shit, I was doing 100 hour weeks with 3 hours sleep on every duty andn1 in 2 duties. Pick your branch wisely, don't go warfare unless you love cleaning. Weapons engineering or marine engineering is the way to go. If you want to be lazy and get the least sea time and easiest duties choose Logs supply chain.
>>
asthmatic here. I can't apply- tried for the navy and rejected.

Navy seems to be cut more than others, then again I see homeless army vets on the streets where I live too. DESU, Either is a good choice but I'd try for the Navy myself.
>>
If you do the Army don't do combat arms unless there is/is going to be a war.

I really regret going into infantry. Most of the time its boring as shit, but deploying was fucking amazing

In terms of caring for their service members:
RAF > Navy > Army

In terms of if you want to actually see "action":
Army > Navy > RAF

Really depends what you want to do, though.

Do you get to chose which role you want to do or do you get selected for them as you progress?

Weapons is more electronic stuff, maintaining weapons systems, repairing electrics in damage control situations. Marine is more mechanical engineering keeping the propulsion running.

My grandfather was in the British army in WW2 too. That was the last war worth dying for so I never joined. You will just be defending mudslimes that hate you too.

I've worked IT at a hospital (possibly relevant for electrical) and I've fixed up small boats and restored cars (possibly relevant for marine).

WW1 made sense at the time...

Maybe.

WW2 gave us a lot of new technology which would have taken half a century longer to develop in peacetime.
>>

Would have taken the slower development of technology over the consequences of WW2 for us anyday.

US got mad fucking rich over it, We got fucked up politicians making entirely the wrong calls that left us behind Germany and struggling for decades.

The west has never recovered from WW2 from a sociological standpoint. Lot of good men died leaving behind cowards and a boomer population.

I watch every The Great War video on the day of release.

I'm under no illusions that WW1 wasn't a bloody mistake. But when technology evolves faster than strategies, the conflict can't end until one side meets it's inevitable attrition.

Most leaders simply accepted that as a grim fact rather than the alternative of negotiating peace terms early on.
>>
>>80778309
With the billions saved by the innovations, I'd argue that it was worth it looking back.

Under war time, definetly the navy. Cooks, not being hit by shells everyday from enemy lines + their is a much greater chance of survival. During peace time, its up to your own preference.

During WW2 my Grandad was a RM Commando . . .he told me that he was really pissed off as he was sent to London to operate searchlights????

He was going to quit but then he was sent to Egypt had did more exciting things.

I'd go RAF first, wouldn't get into jets but would be happy as a cargo pilot, easy transition to being a 747 captain. Wouldn't do choppers cause no one need em.

Otherwise I'd look for some management role in supply chain, work in logistics after deployment.

Chair Force is sweet.

For combat - Marines, always good to get wet, or Mechanized infantry, better not to ruck it to much so dont go light infantry (save the knee's). Avoid artillery: hearing loss. Tankers just become truck drivers, though could be fun.

Navy is respectable but large ships freak me out, I'd be happy being shot out of the sky but torpedoes terrify me.

When your 18 you never think about your future but you really should pick a MOS that will give you the best career post military. Think of it like a 12 year apprenticeship. Buy a cheap house out in the middle of nowhere, rent it out and spend all your cash on mortgage payments, that way your not fucked when you turn 30 with no civilian skills and living on the dole. Be a specialist like a mechanic/electrician at least if you can't get into officers or higher tier techs like nuclear engineer.

Dont just be a grunt and buy a camero and blow all your money on leave, the only skill you leave with is PTSD.

I think we left behind a lot of our values too, m8. I view the United States as having committed suicide in 1945. I wasn't alive at the time, but I don't think we wanted the war, and many - MANY - people here were simpatico with the Nazis regarding the Jews. Japan wanted to emulate the UK and explore other facets of European imperialism in the Pacific, but booped Hawaii. The European theater was one thing, and it wouldn't have been anything but for the Soviet Union. The Pacific though... our hands were forced to use the atomic bombs, which has made good and evil men's eyes glow with desire. The bombs, lend-lease, the Marshall Plan - it all led to American dominance since 1945. I know that Wilson adopted a policy of the United States flexing its muscle on the world stage around the time and during WWI, but I think our non-interventionist ideals still carried as Europe was destroying itself, until the boiling point. It led to the creation of Israel, our collective, brotherly tentacles getting stuck in the Middle East, which, simply put, has led to radical Islam and the world in which we live today.

Chin up there, Britbong - you may still yet advance with Brexit and the decline of the European Union, and its economic engines of France and Germany. We got your back, just like the wars.

Are there good lads in the regiment or is it a load of fucking mongs? HCav was actually something I strongly considered when I was younger, and would still consider if I decided to go full time.
>>

RN, then do this:

Fuck both off and go RAF, if you like infantry then join the RAF Regiment. They do fuck all, get paid more, and also get assigned to Akrotiri which is lush

chavs and mongs tend to just go infantry

The officers are admittedly the poshest people you can imagine, but the enlisted are pretty normal, mostly middle class Tbh

>>80788073
Why wouldn't you just go RM in the first place?

Are you just there for ceremony or do you actually have contingencies to protect Her Majesty?

Are you expected/trained to fight in that armour if it's required?

All seems quite based desu, only thing that maybe puts me off is the idea of shining boots for 10 hours a day.
>>
>>80772088
go army
be alive in a way you can't even understand right now.

the only down side is normal people will disgust you with their little problems when you get back.

navy = soo much boredom.

you know what is in the middle of the ocean. fucking nothing. in every direction.

Eh mostly ceremonial I guess, there are usually police with weapons wherever the cav goes in HCMR

Hcav don't get to carry rifles like the footguards do, just the sword, however it's the only reg that's allowed to have their weapons drawn in the presence of her Maj

You're trained to do shit like chopping things in half on horseback with your sword in phase 2 though

>>80789127
Grooming the horse is the most annoying imo

The problem with that argument is we're not spreading a culture of any sort or any multicul agenda, we're just sort of bombing them and imposing regime change.

I don't agree with it, I'm an isolationist/non interventionist libertarian, but I'm also pragmatic. The military will serve me well, I'm using the government and not the other way around. If it pays for my college and allows me to get a good income, bang foreign qts, and get piss drunk in other countries, why the fuck would I be complaining?

>my autistic ass thinks I'm in the wrong area
>I try to walk away without being noticed
>staff sergent starts screaming and yelling at me in front of several hundred enlistees
>he ask me were I'm going?
>I start to stutter
>"SPEAK UP!" says the pissed off staff sergent
>Tell him where I need to be

Those boots are sexy as fuck.
Sword training sounds fun too.

But the million pound question, anon, does it impress the girls?
>>
>>80789159
That's a vast generalization famalam, no disrespect for the army (I was an inch away from joining it instead of the Navy) but there is a lot more to do then sit on a boat, you get to dock to 20 different countries all over the world. Not to mention in the position I'm going to (seabees) we barely even go on a ship at all, it's just engineering and construction work with the occasional war game, or actual combat if it comes down to it during wartime.
>>
>>80789308
I assume you have to be good with horses?
>>
Any know about the US Navy Civil Engineering Corps?
Is it a waste or should I get to private industry?
>>
>>80789616
Literally had girls put their numbers into my jackboots m80

Not much time off to actually pursue shit like that though

The nightlife is pretty great though, practically rent free to live in Westminster

Now is a good time to join, they're phasing out the nearly 50 year old Scimitar for the Scout SV soon, pretty much the most advanced AFV in the world

>>80790050
I had never ridden a horse when I joined up
>>
USN MM2 (ss) nuke here. Don't do it. FTN and it's only because I'm smart.
>>
>>80790237
Do you get to choose a specific role inside the vehicle? Like a gunner or something? Thing is, I wouldn't like to drive that thing, but wouldn't mind doing anything else.
>>
>>80790103
Their not the same thing, anything you do in the military would in theory serve as a precursor to the private sector. As an officer in the Engineering corps you would be bossing guys like me (seabees) around during construction projects, which could potentially lead to large engineering projects with a lot of logistics and potential combat hazards, this would look good on a resume, not to mention it pays towards engineering degrees in college.

Lads, can anyone tell me about the RAF? On their website it seems like they just play sports all day and get paid for it. Is it that awesome?

I've also got a Engineering (Aeronautical) degree. Does that help me join at a higher rank or does it have no meaning?
>>
>>80790627
Dunno, seems like it'd be fucking hard. One last question. I'm 22, would joining at this age be weird? By that I mean would I be around a load of 17/18 year olds.
>>
>>80774625
Get your A levels boy and join as a junior officer, don't be a dick.

I feel weird about the CEC because I haven't really heard anything bad about it. Everything just kinda sounds good about it: get PE certified, gain some practical experience and veteran status, be able to save up some cash, and maybe see some other places of the world.
I've only been told that it'll be 4-5 years of my life where I could be making money elsewhere, but, with an engineering degree, I don't feel like I'll ever be starved for money.
>>
>>80772088
no, the queen said no more chavs
>>
>>80783452
there were whole tribes of warriors like that back in the motherland and they killed people just fine, thankyou !
>>
>>80791601
That's where I'm going to m8, I never planned on going engineering or mechanics by any means, I wanted to be a producer for film or maybe own a business, but the fact is white collar work has shifted so massively in surplus that there is a demand for blue collar laborers, and I don't mean Mexicans grabbing corn on farms, I mean welders and plumbers and specialized mechanics. They are making top dollar, seriously.

You get your certs, get your experience, have your degree payed for with the CEC funding and Gi Bill, and you are a wanted man for the head hunters in the job markets. Save your money, spend wisely, retire in your 30's. Not a bad gig.

Not necessarily

I known guys who went to Cambridge and joined enlisted inf

It's just the 'default' so chavs automatically decide to join the infantry

That said, it does have the lowest BARB requirement

If you're gonna join the infantry and you're fit as fuck, go paras
>>
>>80792542
What are the fitness requirements for HCav like? No way I could be a para, fuck jumping out of planes on a regular basis.

Really they want you to run 1.5 miles in 10-11 minutes

Infantry are the ones who get seriously beasted, they do full gear runs every week

Whereas in HCMR you'll be doing this shit instead lol
>>
>>80793219
One last question and I'm off to bed. Do you ride the same horse every time? As in, is that "your" horse and you get to know it?
>>
>>80793451
Not really

All the horses have names and what not, but usually the senior NCO's and officers have the pick of the best behaved horses

Sometimes I'll be paired with an absolute bastard horse
>>
>>80793665
Interesting. Thanks for answering my questions mate. Will probably actually go and talk to a recruiter soon.

How /fit/ do I have to be for the fitness test? I do a moderate amount of running and lifting, but nothing too stressful and I've pretty skinnyfat. Got any tips?
It's really the only thing I think I'd have trouble with as I've got the GPA.
