The bulk of Labour voters aren't members of the Labour party, and in fact, it's one of the reasons for such a division between MPs and the party. The MPs have to do and say all kinds of shit the party don't approve of to get the votes of non-party members. This policy essentially makes a party unelectable because they become dogmatic.

Well, Kinnock did a lot of the hard work too. Even Michael Foot doesn't get enough credit (The 1983 manifesto essentially being a purge of bad policies instead of done entirely in earnest. Foot prevented the party splitting more than it already had - those from the SDP had already decided to fuck off when Dennis Healey was still a credible candidate for leader.
