So apparently there was this big ass rock near the tunnel at some place called the devil's bridge. In the local folklore, it symbolized the town's triumph over the devil because they marked it with the sign of the cross and the devil was unable to move it (he was going to use the rock to destroy a bridge the town tricked him into building) .
One of the first things done when building the tunnel was to git rid of that rock.
