Australia doesn't appreciate mathematics and science like America does. I tried to get into the graduate jobs here and I got a few interviews however when you're competing against the same type of person (yuppies).
I figured teaching is probably a good step for me since I come from the lower-middle class and I think I need to support my parents a lot.
Landing a job in Australia is only going to work if you're currently 'wanted', i.e. Maths teachers are always in demand so I don't mind becoming one.
Teaching isn't so bad, but a lot of work does go into lesson planning and working out how to deal with different levels of ability in class (i.e. how do I help the unmotivated, students with 'less ability - read: dumb'). Additionally, teachers and their work will go unappreciated by society as well because society just doesn't know much about the teaching profession and over-simplify it quite a bit.

University is generally a waste of time here if you aren't pursuing something that isn't going to get you employed after a bachelors or masters.
For example, the most valuable degree to get now in our country is probably a nursing or health related one. The next I would say is Teaching if you are passionate for something like mathematics and don't want to pursue a phd.
The graduate jobs are good if you want to become a yuppie but after rocking up to a few interviews for them, you realise that you're meeting the same type of person over and over again.
