Doesn't work because of the ego that was developed in the modern human around 3000 BC. The development of the ego is what created civilization and religion and war. Communism is rather a nostalghic feeling of a past we used to have, where we lacked a developed ego. It's like an adult wishing he could play with toys again. you just can't get in that mindset that you had as a child.

Also to be more specific, communism is a modern human way of trying to live like a primitive human. It's like wearing feathers and thinking you are a bird. Sort of the like the creation of virtues. Primitive humans had no concept of virtues because they had no ego to make the creation of virtues necessary. So the modern human keeps trying to fix problems in a makeshift kind of way. Communism is like an autistic person trying to make sense of dancing by drawing diagrams of limb movements and studying it. But you're not going to be a good dancer that way just as communism isn't going to be a good society.
