It's about a race of psychic alien gems whose bodies are an illusion that thousands of years ago tried to harness earth's energy to create new gems and almost destroyed it. But a few gems, named the crystal gems, revolted and defended earth. After a large battle they were cut off from their homeworld and were isolated on earth.
They stayed on earth and defended it from enemy gems that seem to be suffering some kind of illness that turned them into monsters. Eventually mankind develops civilization, advances to modern day, a beach city is built near the temple of the crystal gems, and the leader of the crystal gems, Rose Quartz, meets a musician named Greg Universe.
She falls in love with him and becomes pregnant. But because of reasons she can't give birth without giving up her own physical form and so turns into Steven, who also inherits her gem.
So at the time of the show Steven Universe is a half-gem, half-human who is beginning to inherit his mother's powers, and is kind of implied to be some kind of weird reincarnation of Rose Quartz while still entirely being a 12 year old boy.
He learns how to a crystal gem and fight monsters and go on adventures while the story while focuses a lot on the emotional bonds between the characters. SJWs love it because some of the characters are fat, it points out that Steven (who is raised by the crystal gems) comes from a non-nuclear family, and one of the crystal gems is actually a fusion of two gems who are in a romantic relationship. And they're both female (all the gems are female, except they're literally rocks).
That's a basic run-down of the show.

This is one of those shows that would be really good if redrawn in the style of anime. I've been waiting for new eps for a while.
