I had planned on enjoying lunch at Olive Gardent this afternoon but had a very unpleasant experience. I often enjoy the $5 lunch special of unlimited soup, salad and breadsticks.
I was seated in a particularly sunny part of the restaurant and I was uncomfortable. I asked my server who looked to be a college age female if I could please be seated somewhere else. She rolled her eyes then obliged.
I placed my order for the unlimited soup, salad and breadsticks and made sure the salad and Italian wedding soup had extra cheese. This meal offers excellent value since the price stays the same regardless of how much you eat.
I could tell that my server was getting an attitude after I ordered my second salad. By the time I competed my meal, she was so rude to me.
I had three bowls of Italian wedding soup, two salads and six breadsticks. Overall, a mild, pleasant lunch. However, I believe I was treated poorly because I am am white and people seem to be disgusted with most white people these days.
What is your opinion of waitstaff that treats white people differently? How can we change?

I went to McDonald's today and got a Filet-O-Fish combo with a bacon cheeseburger on the side. I was eating it in my vehicle in the parking lot and listening to an audiobook when I glanced up and saw the McDonald's worker I ordered outside having a cigarette.
She waved at me and I nodded and had to wait 7 minutes before she went back inside and I could eat in comfort again. I don't think that employees should be bothering or even trying to socialize with customers outside of the McDonald's restaurant or drive through, but that is another story.
I went to McDonald's for dinner tonight and got a McChicken combo with a bacon cheeseburger on the side. As I was driving to the second window the same girl was still working. She was acting somewhat obsequious and attempting small talk when she asked, 'why don't you come eat inside instead of in the parking lot where it is cold'.
That really bothered me for many reasons. First of all, I don't want my routine or actions to be tracked by a fast food employee. Secondly, she should not try to tell me how I should live my life. I do not want to eat inside because I find it less comfortable and would much rather be inside my vehicle listening to an audiobook and enjoying myself and my privacy.
Overall, I think it was very unprofessional to bring this up. I should have a clean slate with each drive through visit, not have to get the third degree because I committed some sort of faux pas. Which I don't think I did, because I often see people eating in fast food parking lots. How does she know I am not busy going to work or somewhere in a rush?

And that's the problem with these "deals" at olive garden and other places like it. It's not such a deal with you get treated like shit and still expected to tip (remember adding tip to the deal makes it not so worth it). The same reason Olive garden won't let you order 2-3 soup bowls at a time cause they don't want to lose money when you don't finish it all, which forces the server to do way more work and for a small tip. You see servers get paid with tips(They get paid like 2.13 an hour), so they have to get sat with guests on a rotation(So that the servers get an equal amount of guests), that servers section was next and you wanted to move like an asshole and ruin the rotation, I hate people like you.

Because when you have 20+ servers its a clusterfuck to have them all across the restaurants taking different tables. Its dumb to have someone have 4 tables on the four corners of the restaurant when its going to it take him forever to get to each table to have you bitch why it took him longer then 5 sec to get you more butter to stuff your fat face. Thats why they have sections, so all of their tables are next to each other, also its easier on us to see how many tables they have, its a clusterfuck to keep track that if we just had you sit where ever you wanted and just have the next server take it.

Has anyone here ever been kicked out of a restaurant? I did at Red Lobster a couple years ago during the Endless Shrimp promotion. I can never get full off shrimp so i basically ended up staying there for nearly 3 hours and had over 150 shrimp at that point, i still wasn't full. i noticed the waiter kept trying to get me to try the cheddar rolls, but i wanted to strictly eat as much shrimp as possible as that is what i paid for. eventually the manager came out and made up some BS that they have a 3 hour time limit for tables and that i needed to leave. i didn't leave a tip since i felt disrespected and ripped off so i've been scared to go back to that location, they'd probably fuck with my seafood.

I didn't feel it to be. I was still hungry. They shouldn't call it Endless Shrimp anymore, they should call it "all you can eat for 3 hour shrimp", if that were the case i wouldn't have a problem with it. but i also noticed after the first 80-100 shrimp the waiter took FOREVER to bring me refills. i think he was trying to bore me into leaving. the last 50 shrimp took nearly 2 hours because he'd only bring me around 10 shrimp at a time at that point.

There is a chinese buffett that had what i thought was a god tier seafood buffet. shrimp, crab legs, raw oysters, etc. for $12 bucks. The first time I went there I thought I was in heaven. Legitimately spent an entire saturday afternoon there from about noon until 7:30. took my ipad so i would have something to do when i took breaks. the workers didn't care at all, they just totally kept to themselves and were cool. I ate at least 5 dozen oysters, dozens of shrimp and half a dozen snow crab clusters. it was awesome.
i went back the next weekend to repeat the same thing and ended up getting the worst food poisoning imaginable. had me basically living in the bathroom for 4 days. thought i was gonna die from it. haven't been back to a chinese buffet since, which is a real shame because the food tasted amazing.

idk... Some places share tips and it makes it confusing. I like to think tipping is what allows me to make discretionary choices. If I want to move to another seat, I usually dont get any trouble, and naturally weigh the consideration into the tip. If I am just treated with basic courtesy, I am happy to give 25%, no less than 20.
If the bill is under $50, I dont mind even going to 40% if the service is friendly (convincing) competent and genuinely attentive. Competence counts a lot to me because I may often not know what the menu is or need help understanding foreign dishes, whats available right then or any insight the service may have.
So if I ask for a special table, I recognize I am asking a courtesy that may complicate some plan.
I like to think of myself as a decent and civil person, and am happy to tip to show genuine gratitude for these courtesies.

Generally i'm a good tipper, because those couple of euros/dollars dont change anything for me but it does for them. Also, im on vacation. Im not here to count everything i spend up to every cent.
It helps that i usually never go to places to require tipping (because friendless feggit).

I took my Italian mother in law to The Olive Garden last night.

Some places don't really emphasize service so much. A smart server, I think, understands there is salesmanship and can make good bank just being friendly and competent, in the right diner.

If the service is just decent, my first trip to a diner, I will try to build a "tip rapport" with staff if I expect I will be back. Partly because I sincerely would like good service when I return without any suspicions that I'm a stingy lout, but also because giving an offending tip for honest work pretty much means I deserve to expect substandard work if I return again and have shown ignorance for honest work.

I make a mental list of the tables that I'm serving and prioritize them based on how much I expect them to tip. If you're in the top tiers then you'll get better service. I'll divide my time based on this mental "tier" system:
>Top Tier:
-College-aged, hipster-looking types. They usually work or have worked in the food service industry, and understand the struggle. You can pretty much set and forget them since they never ask for anything other then the occasional drink refill. They almost always tip generously.
-Working class, blue collar-looking dudes, especially guys that look like truckers or construction workers. Very easy-going and normally polite, and never picky eaters. They almost always tip well.
-People who dine while wearing a work uniform from another restaurant. Gold mines.
>Mid Tier
-Soccer moms with tons of kids. Serving them will be miserable, and there will always be at least one bullshit complaint that often gets escalated to a manager. Tip sucks too.
-Teenagers. Have no concept of money, so never tip. At least they never complain or have crazy requests.
>Low Tier:
-Old People. They for some reason feel entitled to perfect service over everyone else, make their orders super complicated and order special shit that's not even on the menu but "hurr the customers is always right", and then tip $1-$2
-Mexicans or Foreigners. No tip. Ever. It's not necessarily their fault since tipping is a US exclusive custom. Fortunately they seem perfectly content with shitty service.

It depends on your budget of course. If you are going to decent to nice places, 25% on vacation seems kind as long as you are actually getting decent service. I am assuming you are going to decent to nice places, being on vacation.
There are some places, like delis, that have a tip jar as if you are supposed to volunteer donations just for doing the same dang thing they would do without it, essentially giving money for over-counter take out, which just seems silly. I consider that exploiting the system. If I have to stay standing while you fetch an order and just hand me my food to eat elsewhere, a tip jar is a little ridiculous.
There is a different model for bars/pubs of course, and taxis, haircuts, concierges etc. I tend to be the stingiest with barbers, especially if they think they are entitled and dont pay attention to instructions. I try to be generous with taxis just because I dont take them much and cant ask for much more than an honest route and safe trip.
Bars are a bit more delicate. A bad tip can mean waiting forever to get served again. The other night at a casino I tipped a dollar just for ice because the damn machine was broken in the refreshment area and I wanted it tout suite.
