In theory I think it's right that labour should be able to band together to protect their interests, in practice they were a large cause of Britain's stagnation post-WW2, and are today the cause of the US' failing school system.
I think a system of co-operation, instead of confrontation, a la a fascist-esque corporatism would be much preferable.
Unions also produce Labour politicians in Britain, and are responsible for supporting that party, and numerous other left-wing organisations like Unite Against Fascism.

My previous job I worked for a contractor that provided labor for companies that were short of employees on strike. The replacement workforce broke a log of production records. So I laugh when the workers at my current job say "We could walk out and this plant couldn't function."
