Why is British politics so full of missed chances?
1978: Jim Callaghan doesn't call an election, hoping to wait for the polls to move ahead in 1979 so he doesn't have to endure another minority government. Liberals abandon confidence agreement
1979: Winter of discontent discredits Labour, traitor Labour MPs impose an undemocratic rule on Scottish devolution referendum. Scotland narrowly votes "yes" but because it wasn't 40% of the entire electorate (on a fucking shonky voting register), devolution is refused. The liberals were already pledged to back any confidence vote (something people always overlook) and the SNP make a confidence motion - later withdrawn so the tories can make one. Liberal, SNP and Conservatives do it and the government falls by a single vote (which could have come from many sources.)
1980: Dennis Healey runs a lazy campaign to be Labour leader: He loses.
1982: Falklands war leads from Thatcher being at the nadir of her popularity to the peak.
1983: SDP fail to surpass the Labour party. Thatcher wins an increased majority
1987: no SDP breakthrough.
1992: John Major wins (in some ways a blessing for Labour given Black Wednesday was just around the corner) an outright majority. "Free by '93" is a disaster for the SNP. On the plus side, Jim Sillars - who was a reasonable man at the time - fucks off and Alex Salmond takes over
1997: >tfw no SNP breakthrough even though voting Labour was pointless
1999: no SNP win (maybe a good thing longer term)
2003: Iraq.
2007: 100,000 invalid votes which could possibly have given the SNP a larger majority (or maybe are the only reason they won, you never know.)
2010: No Lib-Lab deal purely for the purposes of implement PR then holding another
2014: Scottish independence fails. While possibly a 1992-style blessing, Scotland leaving would hold advantages for English identity too.
2015: Outright Conservative majority
2016: Greens cost the SNP their majority at Holyrood (possibly a blessing - too soon to tell.)

ol' nige has a point about "what they're being taught in uni (schools)". i was raised in glasgow and looking back it, the teachers were all socialists. there was a teacher at my high school who ran for the Scottish Socialist party but didn't get elected.
there were no conservative people besides the women primary school teachers who were all over 50 back when i was there.

A brilliant point as well.

Especially when it comes to Labour PMs, there's a nuance to it as well: Had Brown called in 2007 or Callaghan in 1978, the Tory party may have ousted their losing leader - which could mean an even worse alternative, helping Labour win the next election (or a more "moderate" force coming in - such as someone sticking to the postwar consensus in 1983 under an extended Callaghan term.)

Ah, now to indulge in the best part of the Sunday papers, the letters!

>What a shame there are plans to demolish the old Flitwick Lesiure Centre when it could be used to rehouse some of the millions of desperate refugees who have fled hellhole countries like Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and Greece only to find themselves trapped in hellhole France.

>A couple of hundred of these poor wretched people would probably feel very much at home in Flitwick. And allowing them to settle there would also help change Central Bedfordshire's demographics to more accurately reflect those in the other parts of our multi-cultural country like Bradford, Rochdale, and Luton.

>What is more, as we have three churches here in neighbouring Ampthill - which few, if any, people ever attend apart from at Christmas - one could easily be converted into a mosque to cater for Muslims among the immigrants.

"If the Blairites put forward a candidate to oppose him, Corbyn should stand on a policy of mandatory re-selection for all Labour Party MPs. He can position himself as the anti-establishment revolutionary who wants to put an end to career politicians using Labour seats as a lifetime ticket to the Westminster establishment club. Most of those quotes are taken out of context, some do not exist at all (e.g. the Owen Jones and Muslim councilor one). When he says stuff like this, he's just pandering to make UKIP gain a better image. His intentions are the same as Farage and Nuttall and he's just as good, if not better as he has a positive stigma.

He's not running anyway, so you don't have to fear him.

>>80488441
Both are true, fucking believe me, I wouldn't have to make things up to find evidence of Cuckswell's treachery, not to mention the fact that many of those quotes are literally quotes. Where does the "pandering" end?

When will people learn that if you try to beat the Left at their own game, you become the Left? Where does it end?

>Haha we elected a black man/Paki/woman as party leader, they can't call us racist/sexist now!

>Haha let's tell them that if we leave the EU we can accept far more immigrants from the Commonwealth, they can't call us racist them!

>Haha let's make one of our policies to only lower immigration to 50,000 a year, the same number that were entering the country when Enoch Powell made a speech calling for it to be lowered because it was an unbearable strain - Then they REALLY can't call us racist!

>I know! Let's have our only MP talk about how great diversity is and how the racists in our party are bad, that'll confuse those lefties!

So the spiral goes until you end up like the Conservative Party, fully under the thumb of left-wing dogma

UKIP was supposed to be different

>>80488558
Tell him that then, he's said that the most he'd ever want is to be Chancellor, but with him backing Boris, then Gove, and leaving Leadsom for third, it's not likely even if she wins, and especially in such a high post from the backbenches

He is a little more liberal than I'd like, but he's nowhere near as bad as you're making him out to be.
>>
>>80488880
Except we're not actually going to go through with any of it. They're soundbites made to appeal to people, we won't actually become centrist or go through with them. I checked a few of the sources given in the image, mainly the ones I disagreed with the most, and it seemed as if most of them were taken out of context. Some, like the ones I mentioned previously, didn't exist at all. I checked his Twitter and Facebook pages and couldn't find anything, perhaps linking the exact tweet/post or the date would help? Either way, I think you're perhaps over reacting to a nonexistent threat.

>>80488933
Hah, funny tweet. But I doubt there's actually any animosity between Farage and Carswell.
>>
Former Northern Ireland and Wales secretary Peter Hain, alongside former Lib Dem leader Menzies Campbell, Lord Lisvane and Lord Salisbury intend to present a model for a fully devolved, federal United Kingdom.

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/jul/10/brexit-vote-paves-way-for-federal-union-says-all-party-group?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

>"The group proposes that the shared UK functions would include the monarchy as head of state, foreign affairs, defence, national security, immigration, international treaties, human rights, the supreme court, a single currency, a central bank function, financial services regulation, income and corporation tax powers, and the civil service."

>"Other functions of the existing UK would be controlled by the nations and regions, creating what would in effect be a sovereignty-max solution to the national question in the UK, similar in effect to the “devo-max” proposal that has often been canvassed in Scotland."

What does Brit/pol/ think? Could this help restore unity to the UK or would it ultimately lead to a complete dissolution of Britain?

I'll do my best to find direct links for those two, but the threat is clearly not "nonexistent", that much has been clear since the 2015 Election at least, Farage and Carswell openly attack each other for being too metropolitan / nativist and Carswell tweeted a smiling face when Farage resigned

They wouldn't be placated. They would have a high degree of authority, but would remain in power since Scotland still wouldn't be totally independent.
>>
>>80489615
I'll admit they aren't exactly big fans of eachother but I don't really think they "despise" eachother. Carswell posted the smiley face because of the new opportunities UKIP could face, although I do think it was a bad idea to do so and he is probably happen to see Farage resign. I don't know what you mean when you say about voting Tory in 2020 though. Again, it could be over reacting and paranoia (since you clearly have it with the idea of a carswell coup). Like I said in an earlier post, there's no need to fear anyway because Carswell has said he won't run at all - if he did decide to throw his hat into the ring, he would be seriously discredited and would lead to his own downfall.

No.

Ironically, the opposite would placate them much more - Indy-min. Independence, followed immediately by a EU-style supernational union. Because Scotland would be sovereign and notionally free to leave whenever it liked, but ultimately little would change in daily life (while Scotland would still get some more autonomy.0

Furthermore the Scottish Labour party, one of the main traditional parties, is utter shit, deserved everything it got, and will not recover.

This sort of line always pisses me off, especially when deployed by Labourites against civic-nationalist parties.

There's a difference between internationalism (which would cast aside nationalism essentially as part of a natural process of coming together) and this kind of pseudo-intellectual shit that just wants to keep national alignments as they are now, with extant regional tensions, with a lukewarm mid-term goal of closer union.

If you're "not a nationalist, but an internationalist" then why are you so scared of your English relatives becoming "foreigners", and why don't you publicly want unification with France?*

*Note that this is a line of attack specifically getting at Scottish Labour and types who follow in their line - obviously in the Scottish case there are plenty of respectable unionist arguments. "I'm not a nationalist, I'm an internationalist" isn't one at all.

Almost every good thing Mrs Thatcher achieved has already been overturned, reversed and wiped out.
By contrast, the Labour Party devotes much of its time to making sure that the damage it does can never be undone. Its aim has always been a peaceful but irreversible social revolution.

Challenged to come up with a lasting achievement of Thatcherism, her admirers often tell us how hard it was, in the days before British Telecom, to try to get a new phone installed. So it was.

But have any of these people had any recent dealings with that fearsome, greedy and arrogant monopoly, BT? BT and the other former nationalised giants are now regulated by the State but responsible – in reality – to nobody. Is this an improvement?

We also used to have a number of state industries – coal and steel – which, for all their faults, made or provided things the nation needed. They’ve gone. Now we have regiments of condom outreach workers, facilitators and homophobia monitors, all costing much more than coal miners, and far less useful.

But what about the unions? Didn’t she defeat them? Well, sort of. But who needs stroppy shop stewards now that we are chained up by the intrusive labour laws of the European Union, so that every employer, large or small, lives in constant fear of a ruinous employment tribunal claim?

The European Union is at least as much of a threat to jobs and profits as the Transport and General Workers’ Union ever was. I would say it is worse.

Above all, she failed to fight the cultural revolutionaries who wanted to undermine marriage, dissolve the family, sexualise children and use State schools as an egalitarian sausage machine, turning out brainwashed Leftists by the million.

It was all these unbeaten forces – the supporters of the EU, the quangocrats, the anti-education lobby, the sex maniacs, the local government mafia – who combined to destroy her in December 1990.
>>
>>80492836
While the winter of discontent and overpowered unions definitely played a large part, Thatcher is given far too much credit. She had a lot of help from circumstance (oil started to flow, recovering the value of the pound.) and would probably have lost 1983 if not for the Falklands.

Furthermore Labour had produced "In place of strife" long before those events, but failed to implement it (Ironically the move to kill it was lead by Jamse Callaghan, the very same one who lost his credibility to the Winter of discontent.)

Thatcher did a great many things, but she is severely overrated - both by her supporters and her detractors.

>>80493201
It would essentially break the act of union, though personally I would reconstitute it immediately as a piece of spin to indicate the strong ties between the two countries.

UKIP has a bright future with Suzanne Evans as leader, can't wait to see the bold new anti-racist direction she takes us in!

The feminism Carswell talks of in the source is a positive feminism, such as first wave feminism. Men and women having the same opportunities isn't bad - it's good. I agree that modern day feminism is cancer, but women should have the same opportunities as men regardless.

Care to actually rebuke the image, or do you think posting reaction images is a good argument?

>>80494733
I disagree with him on this. That's fine, I disagree with Farage on some things as well. Even then, Carswell cannot force his will on the party.

No you are just a fucking retard. Please fuck off forever. You know so little about politics it is genuinely embarassing. Get the fuck back to preparing for your A2 in Sociology you literal spunk stain.

Thank you for providing a source for the tweet, I will edit the image soon. Still, I don't see what's wrong with having one Muslim councilor.

Why do you even use a trip? It allows people to use ad hominems to shut you down. If you were really here to talk politics, and not to seek attention, you would post anonymously like everyone else.

>It allows people to use ad hominems to shut you down.
You mean like he does with everyone else?
>>
>>80495182
He uses the same 5 reaction images all the time, so he's easily recognisable.

>>80495182
I don't expect someone from post-2014 to understand, it's an old tradition and one that I cling to - There's no point taking it off now anyway, I've tried it and the usual lot sperg out and scream that it's me as soon as they see a reaction image they know to be mine or a link to a Hitchens article, the ad homs stay the same with or without the trip
