I grew up in a small town in WV and all my friends and I talked about as we were growing up was getting the fuck out of that redneck ass small town.
Unlike a lot of my friends, I had the means to travel a bit around the US. Had family up and down California, had aunts and uncles that took me on trips to the beach up and down the east coast. Parents took me traveling a bit across the US growing up. I've seen the whole country. Ended up moving to California when I turned 21 which was now 6 years ago.
Since, I've stagnated here, and I hate it. My urge to travel hasn't been stifled, but its more complicated now. It's more expensive to travel out of country, and hard to plan around my schedule and my gf's.
I'm torn between moving back to Appalachia... preferably Western NC... and focusing on traveling. I really want to see the tropics. I want to see the South Pacific... maybe Fiji, maybe Costa Rica, the Bahamas.

I've traveled Canada. From sea to sea to sea. I fished off the coast of labrador on a cousins ship, I've done trails in the BC interior, I've hiked the rockies and spent a few months mining for gold with another cousin up in the yukon.

A few years ago I decided for whatever reason to visit Chile and wander around in the Atacama with a couple stubs of Peruvian torch. Never been outside the US before this. I was completely alone. This is only true because when you traveled to another country, you probably did all of what travel companies have decided is the best places to go. There, you will be surrounded by other tourists, and every place you go the demographics of the tourists are pretty much the same.
Whenever I travel, I try to stay away from the touristy areas. Not because of some hipster thing, it's just because if I'm going somewhere I want to see that place. Rather than go to all the fine dining, I will usually find the most local bar around and go in there and start having conversations with the locals. You make friends, and sometimes even go do things with those friends. You will get to see the native way of life in that particular place and actually learn something.
You can also save a lot of money being a traveler instead of a tourist. The closer you get to tourism, the more these places are going to gouge you on prices.

I've only been out of my country twice as a grown up man: a semester in Israel as an exchange student, and 2 months in japan under a training.
Personally, I've found both experiences extremelly enriching academically, but again, I was actually doing something, not simply walking around aimlessly.

I've travelled a lot. Australia, Wales, Germany, France, Spain, etc. Even went to two of these places because I thought I was in love with women I met there.

cycling in Alpes, Bavarian region, Northern Italy and French Rhone region is a good way to spend at least a few weeks. As I generally tend to avoid large cities unless there is some crumbling building I want to visit, cycling through towns and villages is far better option.
If you're not socially retarded ant talk to people, you can learn a lot about local customs, foods, history etc. Might even make a few friends or at least get a free meal or two, some free souvenirs or taste beers in local breweries.

My experience of travelling is that you spend a lot of time actually travelling and very little time relaxing and enjoying yourself.
By the time you finally make your destination you are tired and out of your element.
Something as simple as getting a cup of tea becomes a major task - where can you get one? Will there be a language barrier? Are the prices fair? Will it even be any good? Is there a certain etiquette?
It might sound stupid but it took me over 20 minutes to buy a pack of cigs from a Russian street vendor in Moscow.
I think its nice to visit a few places in your lifetime, but anything more than that becomes wasteful in terms of both logistics and finance.
The real trick is to learn to be content with where you are and what you have.
If you really need to see the arse end of China to fully realise yourself then you are probably just a shitty person.
