British policing still relies quite heavily on community relations and the whole "Bobby on the beat" image of police helping little old ladies across the road.

Police need to be equipped to reflect the demands of the societies they serve.
In the UK, we heavily legislate on gun ownership, so the police are at no real risk of being shot. Therefore, no guns are required to moderate and enforce the law, at least in an everyday scenario.
However, there will be times when police need an armed response (terrorism, latent gun crime via smuggled arms), and we have adequately trained and armed professionals to handle this response.
The US on the other hand, is an armed society. The people are allowed to own guns, with minimal legislation preventing the citizenry from doing so. Therefore, the police need firearms to protect themselves and the lives of other law enforcement officers, as they are much more likely to encounter an armed individual in their everyday duties.
