I had from 13 to 16, read a lot of Alan Watts / Jiddu Krishnamurti, picked up some other random Buddhist books, practiced meditation and idealized Japan just a little bit (sorry India). I have been trying to take the middle path in politics a bit more recently.
Ive found being centrist works quite well, because then you can laugh at the stupidity of both "left" and "right". You also get to make opinions based on common sense and reason, rather than the party line or emotions.
Buddhism is usually fairly apolitical. Its more about accepting that life will have shit parts to it whatever happens, and learning how to deal with it best you can. Ajan bram has said not to get too upset if "your party" doesnt win the election, because you should be focusing on the inner world instead. And while Ajan Bram is at times pro lgbt etc, it seems more like compassion for all living beings, rather than endorsing pride parades. Taoism is probably the most impressive of Eastern philosophies. It's basically Adam Smith style laissez faire with a Chinese twist that existed years before those ideas were developed in the Western World. It's uncanny how similar the ideas are when you get down to it.

Christianity can never be unlinked to concepts of the after-life or notions of soul, of true permanent essences of oneself. Europe suffered through christianity, it kept us in the dark.
