Because we have few rivers, hills, etc. It's far more efficient to have fields laid out on a country mile. Why waste precious resources, time, and mone to make things all fucking curvy and shit?
>>
>>79965861
If you have big open plains, why would you go with anything but the most efficient?

The only reason Europe is unique in this way is because we have all this old structure in place from a time when territory was constantly changing hands. Territory that's relatively small and riddled with bogs, lakes, hills, mountains and other natural obstructions.

If we had the chance to do it all over again we'd go with the most efficient option too. Just look at Rotterdam. Got bombed to shit in WWII, then rebuilt after and is one of the only big dutch cities where car traffic isn't a total nightmare.

tl;dr: stop digging holes on our beaches

Actually its in part because of the rivers, The U.S. has more navigable water ways than the rest of the world combined. the grid's efficiency in the farm belt helps move goods to rivers for shipping. The U.S. therefore has substantially less transportation cost than other comparable countries. Shipping on water is a fraction the cost of shipping by land.

Countries like Germany in Europe which has 3 navigable rivers or France with 1 main one the Siene lack the cohesion of the Mississippi basin in unifying their countries' industrial and commercial shipping. These rivers alone are the reason American can't lose. We're the Walmart of the world.

Why would you make circles when it takes up more space then a square. From an engineering and city planning perspective circles are retarded hipster shit.

You're trying to start shit with something that makes little sense given half of Europe would gladly tear down their towns to create a more uniform city plan to get rid of a whole assortment of problems that have to do with half the shitty towns if they had the funding.

Take it from someone who has lived in a city with shit road design, You absolutely need to have organized roads, ideally designed by civil engineer, and the Grid works ideally. My city (Boston) had to literally dig tunnels under half the city because the traffic was getting so bad that the city was on the verge of complete fucking failure. Yes the city is very nice, and the winding roads are visually nice, But it is fucking impossible to navigate even today for an outsider, and we still have far more traffic problems than a city with so few people in it should have.
>>
>>79968042
The US is much larger than Europe though. You are basically just measuring population density.
>>
>>79965861
Land surveyors are the reason for the uniformed look in the midwest. In the past people bought land as they expanded westward. The boundary lines in the grid mark the size of the land, and it's all uniform because people purchased it in bulk. That's why it's all mapped out the way it is.

I'm a Canadian living in Bongland

England infrastructure, cons:
> Shitty roadworks, electricity underground and sewers in middle of the road... why.
> Tarmack is crap quality.
> Literally floods all the time.
> Non-reflective road paint.
> balls-retarded one-way systems in the city
> people park on the curb, on both sides
> speed cameras in stupid locations

pros:
> Far superior motorway system, way more efficient
> Somehow no severe gridlock during rush hours
> more interesting in some respects
> more considerate drivers due to tight spaces
> Roundabouts keep traffic flowing

Canadian infrastructure, cons:
> even shittier tarmack in most places, probably more to do with the weather.
> Delay on highway due to accident? You're fucked.
> Gridlock every Rush hour day in and outside cities
> Drivers don't know how to fucking use "traffic circles" (american bastardization for roundabouts)

pros:
> grid streets in municipalities makes it slightly easier to navigate, (ie 248 st. is between 249 and 247 st.)
> No speed cameras except in cities and police radar scouts
> Sewer maintenance and roadworks doesn't obstruct traffic

No, the undertow of the Detroit River (the narrowest and only really feasible distance to swim) kills almost everyone that falls in without a life jacket. It flows at 3 million gallons a second.

In the winter, icebreakers keep shipping channels open so you can't cross on foot.

thats because us policy has been to promote car ownership and neglect investing in public transport

no city plan can provide efficient transportation if people insist on driving their cars

if what you say is true then your city wasted millions building new roads which only become congested with new cars. that money shouldve been spent making an efficient public transport system

And again you prove you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Boston has one of the most advanced mass transports for USA, Boston has a comprehensive subway and trolley system and a large carpool incentive program, and double stretch busses. Im almost certain that Mass Transit (known as the T) is one of the most used mass transport networks in the country.

The reason why boston and your euro cities have so much investment in mass transport is because of these civil engineering issues related to roads. The reality is ideally you don't have to spend millions annually to alleviate traffic concerns, and a populace with more money is going to own more cars. We are not poor europe, your shit does not work here

So does Europe you dumb Canuck.
Even here in the Netherlands we have swamps, moors, morasses, bogs, wetlands, quagmires, marshes, fens, slaughes...
>>
>>79965468
You're retarded.
There are several reasons for these differences.
- Terrain. The picture on the left has hills, while the one on the right is flat. The latter is probably from a sparsely populated state that has a lot of flat, farmable land. The grid is ideally organized for industrial farming.
- That's just one example from Europe and from the US. There are certainly areas in the US that are not divided into grids.
- Europe is ancient and has been populated by farming civilizations for millennia. This means the plots have been divided and shifted organically as farmers and lords have conquered, sold or bought different areas for themselves over time. America is a much younger country, and the grid was likely conceived by the government or state to make it easier and more efficient to divide and manage the available land.

American cities are generally designed around eventually accommodating large amounts of traffic. Regular grid patterns facilitate this very well. Cities (totally wrote it as citities the first time) with an irregular layout have the worst traffic, even relative to their size.
>>
>>79970204
Look at the methodology. It takes "education" into accoutn simply based on years attended and not the quality of the education. It also has to do with life expectancy. The quality of medical care in the US is top-tier. But if people want to eat burgers everyday and die at 50 of heart disease, they will, and it pulls down the HDI. That's not a sign of US being undeveloped, its free people (mostly blacks) making retarded decisions, and the US is more fat because of consumerism and the culture of indulgence we have. Which are good things IMO if you are rich and can control them.

Because Europe developed slowly through out hundreds of years while America was rapidly settled and towns and cities popped up essentially over night?
And to deal with that rapid growth we needed an efficient way to divide up the land?
Could be wrong though, it's just like my opinion.
