He took his country out of poverty. During the unconstitutional Allende government, people where hungry, there was no property rights, hyperinflation, scarcity and Chile was under Cuban and Soviet control.

But yes with free market comes inequality, and with inequality relative poverty rises, but not real poverty.

The decline of "productivity" was because aggressive anti-inflationary policies, forcing bad companies to stop production (liquidating bad investments) but it lasted like 3 or 5 years, and was totally necessary (this is why it was a bad idea to hold elections just after the pronunciamiento). then Chile became the richest country of South America.

He was efficient and after an initial phase of shenanigans listened to the monetarists, which aren't ideal but certainly better than the marxist alternative.

Chile is the best country in South America thanks to him.

Your country got plenty of loot out of the inorganic and violent privatization process that Pinochet aides forwarded. Worst thing is, your country's business people are so ignorant and inefficient that they didn't make utilities more affordable or better run.

Except he turned Chile into a country that rivaled Argentina economically; while the various Marxist dictators funded by the Soviets turned their countries into shitholes.

Case in point: Zimbabwe.
>>
>>79964828
Not really, all the militare branches and carabineros where fed up with Marxism and ready to take control with or without Pinochet. Also he was not a dictator:
- Camara de diputados (elected democratically called for militar intervention)*
- He held 2 referendums asking if people wanted elections. Won the first one, the second lost and elections where held and he resigned.

* (in Spanish) http://www.liberalismo.org/articulo/298/60/acuerdo/camara/diputados/

The camara did not call nor voted for intervention. Was the first referendum the irregular process to pass a new constitution?
The plebiscite was held 15 years after the coup. How can you say that's not a dictatorship?

I remember hearing the amazing stories from my anthropology profs about how Milton Friedman flew over Chile in a jet bought for him by Ronald Reagan, parachuted into the capital, and raged hard throughout the city, indiscriminately snapping the necks of every Chilean woman and child to cross his path of mayhem. Friedman's evil rampage prevented the nascent communist grassroots movement, which was almost as popular with the Chilean people as it was with American humanities professors, from reaching fruition. This was a tragedy of epic proportions because the command and control economy was about to usher in a new golden age of economic and sociopolitical utopia. While Friedman was finishing ripping the beating hearts out of the chests of old women and eating them as he quoted passages from Free to Choose, the Chilean people learned to never question the capitalist overlords from Chicago. Legends of the shock doctrine, the massacre of the innocents at the hands of Friedman, spread throughout Latin America to American campuses. When news of the story broke among sociology and gender studies departments there was a collective wail of morning and gnashing of teeth. The critical literary theorists had been unrelenting in their support of the burgeoning Soviet Union at the turn of the century, and they saw what wonders it had worked firsthand for the people of Russia. They felt that they had failed their Chilean brothers. Friedman eventually returned to Chicago from Chile, to return to his Hyde Park throne which was a living chair made from the bodies of welfare recipients, whom were forced to bear their weight of the Libertarian death machine day and night lest their families face the libertarian wrath that had been unleashed in Chile. Now Friedman is lionized by a coalition of Neo nazis, Jewish industrialists, and the religious right, to continue to keep our poor brothers and sisters downtrodden and controlled. Friedman can never die. He is always watching.

And waiting.
>>
>>79965987

Yeah with price fixing you can have a pretty neat CPI, and keep printing (not sure if in the firsts month of his mandate he reduced it or is just your invention). Doesn't change the reality though:

Can anyone here name a single country that significantly developed its standard of living with left-populist policies? I literally can't think of one.

On the other side though, countries that significantly developed standard of living with neoliberal policies are virtually endless: Chile, Singapore, the Nordic countries in the 70's, New Zealand, HK, etc etc etc
