I grew up very close to the Cahokia Mounds and have been in the museum there at least a dozen times from school field trips etc. The museum displays that describe the history of the settlement pretty much go like this: "The shape of the river creates extremely fertile farmland so the Mississippians settled here, built the most successful city on the entire continent, and then just fucked off and left and the Cahokians moved in, and they were still there when the French arrived so we call it Cahokia". I'm not an expert on the history of the city or anything but that sounds like bullshit to me, and seems to play into the whole "noble savage" trope. I can only think of one reason that an incredibly prosperous city is abandoned by one tribe and occupied by another in a short span of time, and that is conquest. And, given the style of warfare that likely existed in that place at that time, it was probably a fucking bloodbath the likes of which medieval europe rarely saw.
So any time I see someone claiming this land belongs to the "Natives" then I want to ask which natives they are referring to, the ones that were here when europeans arrived (Eurocentric bigot much omg) or the ones that were genocided and enslaved by the current occupants. I have brought this up in conversation before with leftists and they really refuse to believe that the natives ever waged wars of conquest against each other, when they were in fact the world's leading experts on genocide.
