Washington didn't purchase a single slave his whole life, and freed those he inherited/obtained through marriage when he died.

The problem was that they couldn't talk the south into outright abolition because such a rapid change would cripple the economy (that's exactly what happened after the civil war) and so they put the 3/5ths rule as an incentive for the south to work towards freeing the slaves. The population was only worth 60% of the votes if they were slaves, but 100% if they were free.
A southern free state would have increased it's representation considerably. Only the invention of the cotton gin threw this plan out of sorts.
