Slaves in South America (namely Brazil) were worked until they died. They usually lived 1-3 years after arriving on the shores.
Slaves destined for America had a better fate and lived until old age.
The policy in South America was that it was easier to just get fresh slaves over taking care of the ones you had.

On the slave ships on the way over to America they were often chained down to a rough wooden 'bed' which would scrape the skin off their backs. Slavery was the false flag used by the north to attack the south. By doing this they were able to consolidate the power of the federal government.

The Stanford Prison Experiment is very well documented and has many real-world parallels, it influenced prison policy all over the world.
There are literally thousands of high profile cases all over the planet of prisoner abuse, from Abu-Ghraib to Black Dolphin.
The reason slavery is inherently bad is that there can be no "humane slavery" because anyone who has that amount of power and control over another person, regardless of their character or intentions, has the potential to abuse that person, and as experiments and evidence have shown, a psychological inclination to do so.

In brazil in particular, the slavery culture was actually rather weak. I blame it cause we didnt have a supremacist culture (or any culture at all, if you will). Do you know how big name philosophers and authors would write whole essays justifing the slavery, usually like white people duty was to civilize the blacks? There wasnt much of this here.
My guess is that slave owners were full aware that black were slaved cause they were on the wrong place, at the wrong time, and they need someone to work on the large farms here.
When slavery was banished here, they bought in a lot of italian and spanish refugees (napoleonic wars were going on), and put they to work about as hard, but they would work gladly cause they were being saved from war and starvation, so no physical punishment too.

Individual rights, or inalienable rights are the philosophical idea of "rights" developed in English common law that rights are endowed upon men by the creator. Human rights stems from the united nations idea of rights, that government grants man his rights and can regulate them.
Seriously, read the UN charter of universal human rights. In the second to last article it says outright the UN can regulate all rights and no rights can be used contrary to purposes and principals of the UN. i.e. freedom of speech cannot be used to criticize global government.
Freedom to bare arms and freedom of the press are oddly omitted from this charter as well.

Basically, a man would inherit slaves from a family member without choosing to and because a state government made so much revenue off taxing the slave industry, slave owners were forbidden from freeing their slaves i.e. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Essentially, slaveholders were being mandated to produce for their government. Slaves could only be freed if the owner chose to not let them be inherited by anyone once he died. After some vicious slave revolts in southern states, states either abolished slavery completely or mandated even death of the slave owner wouldn't set the slaves free.

I remember reading old articles, where some old people who used to be slaves were interviewed.
Apparently they had it pretty good and generally didn't have to worry about anything, just do some work and that's it.
Think of it as forced employment, where the employer takes care of all of your needs.

To expand on what you said, this was because the US banned African slave importations in 1793. If you owned slaves in the US, you had to care for their well-being or hope someone in the US had one for sale that was just as good as the one you lost, (or hope you could buy one smuggled in, which was a slim chance, considering the US Navy regularly patrolled for slave ships, and Mexico went after slave smugglers trying to enter the US via the southern border).
