It's a weird mix of things that causes the self loathing.

This is the foundation. If the parents aren't in a relation/in a bad one, then this colours the way the mixed child sees the world but also race relations. Black-white mixes are usually black father, white mother, with the father often not present. There is no male to look up to, to give the kid confidence.

Being mixed means that you never feel part of either group. This is set at an early age when socialising with others. There are obvious physical differences and other kids will always point them out. Kids will pick on you for anything (too tall, too short, too fat, weird lisp) so picking out someone is a different race or looks different is going to be easy.
The mixed kid feels a limited connection with both races. Less of that connection if the black parent (normally father) isn't there. Resentment starts to build.
