That's one thing many people get wrong: a powerful centralized institution isn't synonymous with indoctrination and loss of freedom.
It is perfectly possible to have a centralized health and basic needs infrastructure, and keep the same civil liberties of a state without those commodities.
In fact, I think that in today's economy some form of regulation is required to keep the power of corporations in check; I don't know, but I don't think being able to eat poisoned meat treated with toxic preservatives is that great of a benefit.

Humans are social animals and one of our primary functions and desires in life to to interact with other humans (anyone who disagrees with this is either lying or mentally ill, I can guarantee this because I have spent large amounts of my life in utter social isolation).
To ensure we succeed in this a state is needed, one that encourages socialization on common grounds, strong traditional christian morals and social teachings are an excellent facilitator of this.
This means that the government should be more than just a referee, it should actively work to enhance culture, while never becoming totalitarian.
