It's not any centralized source. Old documents don't just disappear in 20 years, and it's not like we invented writing 100 years ago.
Plenty of cities/churches kept records. It might be that you wouldn't have any records, eg if your ancestors might have been total nobodies without a penny to their name, living in the forest or streets.
But on the other hand, unless they were royalty, you kind of have to go out of your way to find the records.
