Really, no cultural differences? The northerners in Italy joke that the unification of Italy was really a partitioning of Africa. Not to mention the religious divides in Germany between Bavarian Catholics and the Protestant north. Yugoslavia is way more culturally plausible than some of the large states that exist now.
