I think they hope to improve it over the course of years, perhaps in ways that they can easily role out to older models in the form of software updates, and for that reason they want to take the trademarkable "autopilot" name early on with the real goal being that they can apply it to later, more sophisticated versions. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a trademark on the name "autopilot" in reference to automobiles.
They may have chosen "autopilot" to distinguish it from "self driving" as it has capabilities more alike to aircraft autopilot than google's self driving cars. I don't think any planes can land on autopilot, and I'll venture a guess that most aircraft autopilot would run right into a semi trailer if there were any in the way at 30,000ft.

Teslas aren't really self-driving cars. They've got a small camera that does image-recognition and can detect obstacles to a degree, but it's nowhere near good enough for driving the car by itself.
