http://finance.yahoo.com/news/tesla-driver-killed-crash-while-012228445.html

>The first person to die in a U.S. crash involving a car in self-driving mode was the tech-savvy 40-year-old owner of a Tesla Model S who nicknamed his car "Tessy" and praised its sophisticated "Autopilot" system.

>Joshua D. Brown, of Canton, Ohio, died in the May 7 crash in Williston, Florida, when his car's cameras failed to distinguish the white side of a turning tractor-trailer rig from a brightly lit sky and didn't automatically activate its brakes, according to government records and a Tesla statement issued Thursday.

>Frank Baressi, 62, the driver of the tractor-trailer and owner of Okemah Express LLC, said the Tesla driver was "playing Harry Potter on the TV screen" and driving so quickly that "he went so fast through my trailer I didn't see him."

>"It was still playing when he died and snapped a telephone pole a quarter mile down the road," Baressi said in an in an interview from his home in Palm Harbor, Florida. He acknowledged he couldn't see the movie, only heard it.

Americans are this lazy.

Good, this tech is just one more way for the government to know literally everything and control everything we do

To be fair, tesla's "autopilot" is more like glorified cruise control than anything else. Only allows you to stay in one lane matching the speed of the car in front of you. Lane changes only one lane if and only if turn signal is engaged. It's not meant for morons to watch movies at the wheel, but rather to navigate slow-moving or light traffic. Dumbass had it coming.

That being said, marketing the tech as "autopilot" is definitely not the best idea, and is probably going to end up in a pretty sizeable settlement.

I'm Germany? Or you mean people? Because I'm constantly seeing retards driving around me. We could stand to benefit from a stoplight automation where all vehicles at a light will automatically lift off the brake and start acceleration at exactly the same time instead of the garbage we have now where you have to wait for everyone in front of you to wait for everyone in front of them to start accelerating and get far enough away before they start and then before you start. The Volt is a plugin that uses electricity for propulsion until the batteries run down, at which point the gas engine automatically takes over and you can drive on as you would in any other car. The Tesla runs down and you're in for a long recharge before you're ready to be under way again.

I'll offer what I think is the reason, canal digger.

I think they hope to improve it over the course of years, perhaps in ways that they can easily role out to older models in the form of software updates, and for that reason they want to take the trademarkable "autopilot" name early on with the real goal being that they can apply it to later, more sophisticated versions. I wouldn't be surprised if they have a trademark on the name "autopilot" in reference to automobiles.

They may have chosen "autopilot" to distinguish it from "self driving" as it has capabilities more alike to aircraft autopilot than google's self driving cars. I don't think any planes can land on autopilot, and I'll venture a guess that most aircraft autopilot would run right into a semi trailer if there were any in the way at 30,000ft.

Tesla's "auto-pilot" isn't actually an autopilot and requires the user to keep his eyes on the road. It's more like a drive-assist for retards with shitty reflexes and driving ability.

Google has an actual autopilot car, but that's still work in progress.

The "autopilot" feature on the tesla isn't an actual autopilot feature, but they're complete morons marketing it as an autopilot feature and this is now the result. They're going to be hit with a massive settlement for this.

The only company with an actual working self-driving car on the road right now is google. Everyone else is playing catch-up.

Teslas aren't really self-driving cars. They've got a small camera that does image-recognition and can detect obstacles to a degree, but it's nowhere near good enough for driving the car by itself. There is no radar, no lidar, and it doesn't even cover the entire field of view around the car. (most notably it cannot detect stuff at about cabin height that isn't touching the road.)

Tesla's fucked up by implying in their marketing that their autopilot can drive the car by itself as if it's a full-featured self-driving car, so they'll likely get hit with a huge settlement from this.
>>
>>79359664
Good. Self driving cars need to be banned. And not because they're dangerous, but because they could potentially give the government the power to end your life at a moment's and easily make it look like an accident.

Because the government wants to control your ability to move around the country while simultaneously tracking your movement.

The possibility of murdering hundreds of thousands of dissenters in unfortunate accidents is just icing.

People will use self-driving cars because they're cheaper, and there will eventually be legislation banning you from driving on your own in maybe 40-50 years. Enjoy driving while you still can.
