However most likely their family members would try and keep correspondencies going between them; alerting the main stream white guilt people immediately if they haven't heard word from their buddies , plus I imagine most people have cell phones and ships and phones are equipped with GPS , so whomever would become concerned could just track their paths to the last location their phones communicated with the servers, it would become pretty obvious what happened at a certain point.
Basically a stunt like this would be hard to pull off
