We got fucked on many different fronts in regards to the White Australia policy. In particular Britain was blackmailing us and saying they would flood us with Indians if we didn't pay them 35k pounds a year. Also the sugar industry here lobbied relentlessly for restrictions to be lifted so they could get cheap labour. There was also talk of Australia being kicked out of the Commonwealth in the wake of South Africa leaving because of our "racist" policies.

At the time there was also a large amount of public...well not really guilt persay but the feeling that because we had such a low population and such a vast country we should be bringing in lots more people in order to develop other areas.
