The way I see it, his extreme xenophobia, fucked-up upbringing, and slew of strange phobias enabled him to be afraid of everything. In turn, this let him write great horror fiction, especially about the unknown and alien, which a large part of the world was to him.

I have the same edition but in a different cover.
It includes the uncut versions of his stories (some editions use the magazine printed versions which were edited by publishers). The bad news is that its filled with a fuckload of type-os. Especially "Dreams in the Witch House".
Also, it doesn't include poems and minutia, like "The Fungi from Yuggoth". Overall, though, it's pretty complete and a good bargain.

Lovecraft could be repetitive, yeah. But I think what people forget is that "weird fiction" and "CoocooCoocoo Mythos" stories don't begin and end with Lovecraft. You weren't really meant to sit down and read Lovecraft's complete works from beginning to end in publication order.
They read best when you intersperse them with works from contemporary weird fiction authors who borrowed and donated concepts and characters. Clark Ashton Smith, Robert Bloch, Robert E. Howard, Fritz Lieber, Frank Belknap Long, etc.
If you stop at just Lovecraft you're kinda only getting the fringe of the material. They all worked together and riffed off one another and their stories were published side by side in the same magazines as part of a bigger picture.
