How does it feel, Brits, to get pounded by Angela "Allah Akbar" Merkel?
-----
European leaders are scheduled to meet at a summit in Brussels later today to discuss the consequences of the British vote to leave the European Union. Merkel called the vote an unprecedented event in EU history but one the remaining 27 member states will weather.

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, warned the UK that there could be no “cherry picking” in its Brexit negotiations in a tough response to Leave campaigners’ hopes of securing access to the internal market while limiting freedom of movement.

In a speech to the Bundestag on Tuesday morning, Ms Merkel spelt out to London that the EU’s internal freedoms were indivisible — if Britain, like Norway, wanted access to the internal market then, like Norway, it would have to accept freedom of movement.

“We will ensure that the negotiations will not be run on the principle of cherry-picking,” the chancellor said, drawing applause. “We must and will make a palpable difference over whether a country wants to be a member of the family of the European Union or not.

Whoever wants to get out of this family cannot expect that all the obligations fall away but the privileges continue to remain in place.”

Ms Merkel was speaking ahead of a European summit in Brussels that begins on Tuesday evening, where David Cameron, the UK prime minister, is due to explain the shock referendum vote to fellow heads of government and then leave them to decide their formal response to the union’s first exit since its foundation nearly 60 years ago.

Her words were a rebuff to Boris Johnson, the chief Brexit campaigner and possible successor to Mr Cameron, who declared on Monday that Britain would retain “access to the single market”.

>if Britain wants to trade with the European market it needs to accept the freedom of movement

based Angela cucking Nigel once again
>>
Sounds like hot air. Ultimately, it's only the UK who can invoke article 50. I don't care about freedom of movement myself, I voted Leave to get us away with from the EU's parliament. I don't mind trading and opening borders to fellow EUROPEANS.

But at this point there's a lot of rumbled Eurocrats looking for blood.

britain exports less to EU than it exports idiots. They could give a fuck about german cars and get better deal with US and Jap instead, whereas EU looses a big part of the market.

the only one getting cucked is the EU.
>>

>Ultimately, it's only the UK who can invoke article 50.
So? And the UK will invoke it or stay in the EU forever.

the point is that Merkel said Germany wants freedom of movement, or Brits will get no ficki ficki in the single market.
>>
>merkel: I'm literally crying right now
>>
>>79070246

but could they? Obama has already said Britain needs to head to the back of the queue if it wants to create new trade deals with America. Only Trump would be their hope of gettings things done quickly.

And if they want to trade in the east, Russia and China will make sure they will get the short end of the stick.

I suppose Britain can trade with India, Brazil and Africa...wew lad, I'm sure it'll make huge profits

Goods trading is subject to WTO rules. Unless the UK also exits the WTO, which is highly unlikely, German car makers and machinery makers have nothing to fear from the UK not having any trade deal with the EU.

Meanwhile, no trade deal means the London finanial sector is completely 100% shut out of the EU market, because WTO rules have not been set up for services.

"Freedom of movement" means race war. They are the same concept. The autistic Germans are allowed to tell themselves that they put up a perfectly legible paper sign, clearly lettered and held by a reasonable piece of tape. But "freedom of movement" means race war, it means innocent people dying violently.
>>
Both sides are awful here.
Brits with their delusions (all the benefits and no obligations) and EU as EU.
>>
>>79070558
isn't Switzerland the main financial services exporter in our territory?? How do they manage it?

Maybe London could become a tax haven, since they wont have to abide to the EU regulations anymore.
>>
>>79069724
This will destroy the EU. Bullying those who decide to leave (or appearing to) will strip away the very little amount of good faith still left in the union. Politicians who want to be elected will be forced to present their continued membership as something they must accept out of fear and it'll grow resentment against EU leadership among the populace. That's how anti-Euro parties are gaining a foothold and pushing for referendums.

Wanting to look like the bad guy is a stupid idea from stupid people. EU officials who couldn't keep their mouth shut were the ones who lost the referendum for Remain in the first place.

hahaha you realise this is all false, right? the eu and merkel are completely shitting their pants over this. Shes putting on a tough stance to try and deter other eurosceptic movements from rising.
the eu rely on exports to britain more than we rely on them. hundreds of thousands of jobs in germany rely on us. imagine how BMW and the other car manufacturers will react when merkel tells them theyre going to lose out on billions annually because they cant sell to us anymore.

when article 50 is initiated in october (hopefully before) and when the official negotiations start, we will get a very good deal.

Exactly. This American gets it.

British culture from Lands End to John O'Groats is bitter, passive-aggressive and difficult.

We don't react well to being threatened, the same as most of the Anglosphere.

Europeans are such cucks, it's why threatening works for them.

If the EU ever truly wanted us to stay, they should have been kind and open to us - they should have shown genuine affection for the UK and her people.

But they would never do that, because they don't like us, and we don't like them.

There will be no freedom of movement.
We will either get entirely free trade or go to WTO rules, which will make your goods more expensive so we will buy less...so you will suffer.

There is no way to play this where you win. Its over before its even started.

>>
>>79070313

If they are completely unreasonable it'll just send the message that EU punishes former members of the Union who leave properly under the EU's own rules.

Furthermore, it's not like the UK or the EU can make a clean cut from one another in a trading sense. The fact of the matter is that we import and export into one another quite a bit and severe changes in tariffs will hurt both sides.

It's all well and good talking strong, but realistically England isn't likely to come out of the Union in a equal trading position with the EU, but it's not going to be severely punished because that would both send the wrong message and punish EU markets just as severely.

A reasonable compromise will be met. If the Europeans want to spite us just for the sake of it, it's going to cost them as much as it'll cost us.

The EU has to handle this situation very carefully; it's true they can't just let Britain continue on with all the privileges they used to have as a member, but at the same time severely punishing England will just reinforce the words of euro-skeptics inside the EU.

Honestly a lot of the language coming from Brussels comes across as impotent rage that the UK population would make this decision. A lot of hot air over something they have no control over; if they took the issue seriously maybe this wouldn't have happened in the first place and that's why you get Farage openly mocking them for their arrogance.

The WTO trade rules are aversive but overall impact is just reciprocal tariffs. Germans will probably gain domestic and EU market share to make up for people in Tunbridge Wells swapping their Audis for Hondas. We'll lose 10% of GDP at the best case because the EU is this huge trading bloc we aren't going to be in.

The Swiss government doesn't operate at a catastrophic deficit.
There's three ways you can be a major financial hub:

1. your government is historically fiscal conservative, so investors feel safe keeping their money in your banks (Switzerland, Singapore)

2. Your anti-evasion, anti-laundering laws are either lax or non-existent, so all sorts of shady people use your country as offshore (Panama and other micro nations operate like this). Keep in mind this option is only good if you have a very small economy. There simply isn't enough dirty money in the world to sustain a financial sector the size of the UK's, no matter what tinfoils say.

3. Your economy is so massive it becomes attractive for banks to settle in your country, which draws """"talent""""" and further reinforce your position as such. Two countries are in this position: the US and the UK. Except the UK economy was only massive because we were part of the single EU market. Now we're out, we're as attractive to house large banks and financial institutions as Brazil, France or Russia, especially because we can't fit into category 1 or 2 because there isn't enough political momentum for us to even adopt that kind of governance.

Brexshitters keep bringing up MUH IMPORTS as leverage for Germany to be kind in the negotiations, what these idiots don't realize is cars and machinery don't fall under the same category as financial transactions and clearing houses for the WTO. Unless we become a complete pariah in the world, we won't be able to raise high tariffs and trade barriers against Germany as that would force us to do the same to every other country. Germany on the other hand, has all the right to tell our financial service to fuck off without consequence.

And you know what's really sad? Farage has experience in trading. He knows how these things work and he knew our financial sector would suffer. He fucked a whole country over to advance his career, the little psychopath.

The Chinese have also made it clear a UK outside the EU has nothing they need or want, it might even be better economically for them collect tariffs instead of spending money on negotiations. The UKTR in Beijing is rarely even granted an audience, it took a trip to see the Queen for them to say hello to him.

That attitude will be common amongst the 54 external trading partners we've also now pissed off.

You won't believe how much money we have in GErmany right now. We could bail Greece out 10 times over, and still got so much money, people are literally paying us so they can give us money. Not even kidding.
>>
>>79073368

except we won't stop paying rent until we actually leave.

after that we're basically a foreign nation that much of the EU trades extensively with; making it hard to trade with the EU would hurt both Britain and the EU members involved.

I mean sure, it's stupid some people on the Leave side argued money we got from the union wouldn't stop, but those were never realistic claims. I just don't see the EU completely shutting us out without burning themselves down in the process. It just isn't good business.
>>
>>79073759
Then what's going to stop the Swiss and the Norwegians from saying fuck off, we just want the trade bit, but not the rest? And in an even worse case, actual member states?
And the EU came into being because the first half of the last century didn't exactly work out fine.
But I agree on the part that there needs to be less regulations within the EU, and the sole competences of it need to be cut back.

Well sure, their 'control' has basically been 'we won't talk to you until you invoke article 50.' It's just them trying to sound tough but they don't have any actual say on if or when we leave. They've taken it as granted we're going to do it and decided to take the stance that no negotiation can take place until that.

So I guess they have control in the sense they will force it to all be formal proceedings? Seems more like a diplomatic tantrum to me.

Why should BMW not be able to seel to Britain? the UK can't do shit about BMW selling to Britain. The UK would have to leave the WTO to do anything, but I highly doubt the UK would do so.

Meanwhile, British banks will just not be able to access the single market, if the UK doesn't bend over and get rammed in both holes by the EU in the negotiations. No WTO rules there, just raw fucking.

Yes, and I'm fully behind that, but still, for an effective trade union, you still need some common institutions and common regulations - especially for services. And obviously not bogus legislation like how curved a cucumber can be.
Best would be imo if EU competences were to be cut back, especially in things like asylum policy, but it doesn't need to go alltogether.

No, they cannot. ALL American banks have to have an office and all people required to do business in the EU and be subject to all EU regulation.

Once the UK leaves, the British banks would be treated like US banks. That is, everything a British bank wants to do in the EU, it has to do from their offices in the EU, e.g. from Frankfurt or Dublin, but they could not use London any more for most of the work.

Plus they would be subject to dual regulation, the British regulation and the EU regulation and dual supervision, the British supevision and EU supervision. Just like American or Japanese or Chinese banks.

This whole Brexit spectacle has made me certain about one thing - Who our friends are.

France and the United States have been nothing but gracious and helpful regarding our decision, because there is a genuine affection between our people. Sometimes we piss and moan, but I knew at least you two would help us out.

The EU as a whole never appreciated the UK, never saw us as cultural equals, regardless of the fact we're infinitely more relevant than them - there's no point being in that union.

> and if you think other english-speaking countries aren't going to jump at the chance to negotiate more mutually beneficial trade with the uk then you're all delusional.
That is not the issue. Not sure what "more beneficial" trade deals with the UK would look like (the EU trade deals include unfettered trade already), but hey, it is all a question of paper. It takes quite a long time to negotiate 100+ trade deals. Even Switzerland took 20 years to do so, same for the EU, same for Norway, ... the US has fewer trade deals than the EU, despite bullying countries for 50+ years.

I say, the UK will have its trade deals in place by 2030... but that leaves a few years in which trade is impacted. And just a CAnada or TTIP style deal with the EU would seriously reduce investments and trade overall.

Really the smartest thing they could do would be to appease the UK as much as possible. The UK is going to go through some short term struggles as they transition. If the EU is seen as accommodating then they can't be seen as blameworthy.

People will see the reality of a large economic transition and become more sheepish about leaving the EU.

If Merkel is seen as sabotaging them it will just fuel the euro-sceptic fire and possibly lead to more nationalist parties getting into power and a recession throughout the EU.

>I don't even get where Brussels gets its power from
The areas in which Brussels can legislate on its own, or together with the member states are laid out in the founding treaties, which all countries need to ratify. I'm not sure about all countries, but here that means the parliament has to accept it as well ( I just assume it's the case in most places as well).
So indirectly, people can have a voice in that, by electing politicians into their national parliaments that would reform it in a way they see as their best interest. But that's a very utopistic thing, since most people hardly understand their own national politics, let alone the EUs.

Bruh, the EU is about to collaps 4 other EU states INCLUDING Germany are calling for referendums to leave the EU; when the EU collapses the German economy will be fucking decimated back to post WW1 levels.
In 50 years time you'll be lucky to be living in a country that's still called Germany.

>Because those deals aren't particularly good. You want to make an example out of us so that the whole EU won't come crumbling down.

Why should the UK get a different deal than Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, if it wants access to the single market?

If it doesn't want access to the single market, why should it get a better deal than Canada or Turkey?

I don't understand the logic behind the UK getting some gold plated "gimme total access, but I ain't paying for it, nor can you work here, but I can work at your place, no questions asked" deal?

Yeah I guess that applies to most things. When it comes to animal protection the EU just issues guidlines which the member states have to stick to. Legislation is carried out on a national level but since the guide lines are so restricitve you don't really have much space interpreting them.
Most regulations are weird as hell anyway. Espeicially this whole refugee thing is crap

We're prouder than most. Simple as. That, and we're not your subordinates, our country has existed for a lot longer than yours, England is infinitely more 'European' than the failed Bismarck state.

We're going to make this as difficult as possible for everyone involved, as is our way.

Burger, that is what the King of England said about the USA in 1812 and decades thereafter. Did it happen? Nope.

Stop shilling nonsense. The EU isn't going anywhere, the cost of leaving is just too high for any country with the Euro and much too high for any Eastern European country.

The only country I can see actually voluntarily leaving is Sweden. The only country that I can see getting thrown out is Greece.

Thats an overstatement, britain has always had a far higher eurosceptic wing.

Best thing the EU can do is treat the UK the same as any other non-eu state, and start trying to combat scapegoating for national decisions.

When did UK ever get a say in the EU? Don't they just debate a bunch of stuff and then do whatever Germany wants in the end?
>>
Well, before we do anything rash, we should realize the United kingdom is still a market for us, as much as we're a market for them.
If the EU just fucks them over, I'll be even more convinced it needs to die.

I've really been surprised with how poorly many Germans have been acting towards the British. Really thought they would have been more friendly about it

I don't know if it's just because we're American and admire freedom, telling higher powers to fuck off, and democracy (at least what we perceive to be these things), but even when I talk to other Americans who were against Brexit, they'll just shrug and say something like 'oh well. it's their choice, good for them' or 'hope they don't regret it.'

This whole thing has just made me happy that you guys got out when you did. The Eu wants to restrict trade just to punish the Uk? In a way that will also hurt the EU? And now they're talking about restricting other from leaving? Madness. Being a part of that is not worth the economic benefits in my opinion.

Read up on it, Toyota, GM, Chrysler etc. all had similar emission scandals with software in the past.

Volkswagen is the 7th or 8th company since the 1980s which has been caught doing it. But because it is the largest automaker, the US fucked it over and extracted 15 billion in fines.
