I once heard the argument that "colorblind" leads to unintentional racism by whites because when whites try to be "colorblind", they're trying to be racially neutral. But, the problem is that what whites consider to be "race neutral" are actually white standards and cultural norms, different from the standards and norms of other cultures and races. Thus, white people think they're being neutral, but actually are measuring everyone else by how "white" they effectively are acting. So what makes this a problem, so the argument goes, is that it presumes that white is normal and anything different is "wrong".

If you're implying that merits themselves are inherently white, too bad. We want good grades, hard workers, leaders, entrepreneurs, etc. Those aren't white values, they're Western values. I'd argue they're collegiate values themselves.
A college which recruits on merit doesn't exist to not learn, not work, not lead. If you don't have those values because of your culture, then it's your culture at conflict with the values of college. Why would you go if the goal of college itself is to impose values that undermine your culture?
