I saw in the news that the process for the UK to withdraw from the EU doesn't actually begin until the PM invokes Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union, until which point the UK is still a member and has to fulfill all EU treaties.

Realistically, is there anything that prevents the British PM from just never invoking Article 50?

No.
The Referendum is not binding

If they don't the Tory party will tear itself in half and they will never see office again this century.

By the sounds of it, neither will labour since they are in the process of eating themsemselves

No but it'd destroy their party. With Labour in shambles and looking like it might split, that'd mean that something like UKIP could finally gain ground even in a first past the post system. It'd be unwise.

True. It would be Peter Hitchen's wildest dreams come true.

So are you ready to vote monster raving luney? They seem like the only stable party left

I'll see. These days there are only 2 things that interest me politically - Scotland staying in Britain and Britain leaving the EU.

Once those two objectives are secured I might just leave politics entirely. Go outside and enjoy the fresh air for once.

I feel you anon, im very on the fence about the scotish thing.
Although i could see that backfiring on then as Northern Ireland and Wales seem to want to stay. Additionally England would be the strongest nation out of the 4 which i expect scotland wouldnt like very much either.
Whats your thoughts anon?

Scotland will likely be the toughest battle, but for the amount of sound and fury the SNP and their supporters make, I believe the majority of us normal Scots don't hate England and think leaving would be a mistake.

There's issues to be fixed with Westminster and the complete dominance of London in general (over the entire country, not just Scotland), but there are ways that that can be fixed without the union breaking up entirely.

these things might be mutually exclusive. currently scotland is (righfully) disappointed that the referendum has passed in this fashion.

scotland, NI, and wales all receive a good deal of money and other advantages from being in the EU - now that we are (supposed) to pull out they will no longer be eligible for that. As such, the break up of the UK seems quite likely since england can not realistically provide those advantages.

>scotland, NI, and wales all receive a good deal of money and other advantages from being in the EU

That argument doesn't really work on a net contributor to the EU. They're just giving us our own money back except with an EU badge on it.
>>
>>79016732
why do you want scotland to stay?
>>
>>79017654
Scotland, Wales, and NI aren't the net contributors.

As such, they are likely to prefer to remain since they will undoubtedly see a harder recession than England.

Because while I am Scottish I am also British. We have and will continue to do great things together. We're all family, figuratively and literally.

The issues that Scotland has are mostly domestic in origin, not that many will admit it. Westminster and/or the English are just a scapegoat for the failings of socialism that continues to destroy our chances of prosperity by keeping everyone addicted to handouts rather than making their own way in life and fortune.

How many jobs is Diane Abbot doing right now?

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not separate countries with separate economies m8.

If what the EU invests in them is good for them, then the UK can do that too as like I said - It's our money in the first place anyway.

Scotland has already been told they will exit together with the rest of the UK and will be vetoed by Spain and Belgium as soon as they try to get back in (which will take about 3 years anyway).

The EU Commission has gone full Angry Pepe with the whole: GET OUUUUUT GET OUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT demand.
