I don't like do and don't think it's right. I do most of the time though when it's like two or three bucks. If they're REALLY good, I'll give them four or five.

If you don't tip in the US, in most states you're an asshole. Restaurants don't operate on giant margins, and the tipped minimum wage credit is allowed in most states meaning people can be paid as little as $2-$3 an hour with the expectation that they make it to minimum wage on tips.

A lot of chains don't expect tips, some actually disallow the practice of having a jar or container. Coffee shops have tip jars in them in the US often.
Anyhow in the US the rule of thumb is that the tip jar is totally at your discretion and is not at all expected if the place you're getting a beverage or meal from does not provide table service where someone brings the meal to you. Staff receive a fair minimum wage (which is increasing to a living wage) for unskilled labour, and that's that.
