Numbers on the drawing are inconsistent. The altitude should be sqrt(60), not 5.

I don't get what's wrong with the problem?

You can solve it as a trapezoid or by two triangles+a square

What's so bad about it?

it's impossible to answer

What is the problem here? Are todays kids retarded?

the triangle to the left is 8-5-2, an impossible triangle. So the whole thing turns out wrong

whats the problem?
the trapezoid consists of a 12x5 square, plus two triangles. the triangles together form a 5x4 square, so the total area is (12+4)*5 = 48*5 = 196.

Solve it both ways. You will get two different answers. This is because with the given height and lengths, the hypotwnuses of the two triangles that make up the sides of the trapezoid should not be 8
>>
>>78880886
Ok while your kid is arguing with the teacher about how the triangle is impossible my kid will be sitting there waiting for him to catch up.

Who cares if it is impossible or "that isnt how it works". Its asking for a number, not a smart comment.

This problem can be done in 3 steps, by treating the shape as a modified rectangle

16+12=28
28/2=14
14*5=70

Also (16-12) / 2 = 2 and 5^2 + 2^2 =/= 8^2

Youre a fucking idiot. Because of the fact that the shape is impossible, you can get two different answers depending on what method you use to solve for the area. I dont think your kid will be waiting for anything considering his dad taught him to blindly work instead of learning the basic concepts that make up geometry or any form of math or science by thinking critically and asking questions when things dont seem to add up. You are part of the problem.

That is cheating. It's heavily implied that the entire base is length 16.

First what is object A?
Next is the line 5 at 90 degrees to either line 12 or 16?

If the implication is that it's a 5x12 square with 8x5x2 triangles those triangles are mathematically impossible.

If you want the real answer, here you go:
There are infinity possible solutions. The lower limit approaches A=sqrt(1008)=31.749015733 from above. The upper limit is A=40+sqrt[((20+sqrt(25+(16-sqrt39)^2))/2)(((20+sqrt(25+(16-sqrt39)^2))/2)-(sqrt(25+(16-sqrt39)^2)))(((20+sqrt(25+(16-sqrt39)^2))/2)-12)(((20+sqrt(25+(16-sqrt39)^2))/2)-8)]=82.684891941.

Hey you may not like my answer but it asked and I gave it a solution. You are welcome to complain and get caught up on a small detail but I could care less about textbook problems that have little to do with real life. The only thing i find wrong with OP pic is thae fact that for the triangle base lenght to be consistent with the trapezoid base lenght, the triangle base would have to be 2. Well, that way the hipotenuse is larger then the 2 catetus combined.

But i don't think it deserves the amount of reposting this does. After all, it's still a valid exercise to 5th graders, and very few would notice this mistake.

Youre stupid dude. To find the area of a triangle find the area of a square and divide it by two. Each triangle has an area of 10
>>
>>78882051
What is impossible about it? Are you a fucking retard?

You can use the pythagorean theorem to find the base of both triangles and then just find the area of a rectangle and add.
>>
>>78881236
A triangle with sides 5, 2, and 8 is not possible.
>>

80. You're forgetting the other side. 2(1/2B*H) + (B*H)
>>
>>78880082

the area of the square in the middle is
5 * 12 = 60

there is two times the same triangle so its a square
5 * 4 = 20

60 + 20 = 80

A right triangle, or in fact no triangle can have those measurements. You can solve just the numbers, but it's not really possible.

>Youre stupid dude. To find the area of a triangle find the area of a square and divide it by two. Each triangle has an area of 10

I think you need to check your math, and look up the definition of a square while you are at it.

Then I suggest you try and find the unknown length of a triangle with a side of 5 and a hypotenuse of 8.

good thing the problem doesn't require the Pythagorean theorem to solve and isn't a treatise on pythagorean mathematics then
>>
>>78880617

>>
>>78883963
The problem is also missing the right angle indicator which would imply that 5 is the height. By making the assumption it is the height, you are the one making the mistake. It's a problem that can't be solved.
>>
>>78881194
The pythagorean identity will only work on right triangles. It cannot be implied that the central angle in that triangle is right because there isn't an indicator (e.g. the box) that says that the angle is right.
>>
>>78882171
>>Implying this is anywhere near correct or even possible
I didn't imply that you stupid sliteye
>>
>>78882457
But the triangle is not a right triangle.
You can't imply that the triangle is right unless there's an indicator that says it's right. The Pythagorean Identity only works on right triangles.
>>
>>78884314
You don't need to do pythags. Just take the area of the triangle x 2 + the area of the square. No pythags necessary. You already know the base is 2.
