You can legally buy fully automatic rifles, but it takes you a waiting period of about half a year to a year, you have to apply for a special tax stamp, and during the waiting period you are severely under watch by the ATF, because youre buying a fucking full auto rifle.
Also you can't buy any that are manufactured after 1984, and the cheapest ones you can get your hands on cost several thousand dollars (not much for some people, but it's much higher than $600 for an off the shelf SEMI AUTOMATIC ar-15.)
