Thoughts on the French Foreign Legion?

Gonna give it a go once I save up a couple thousand dollars and can afford to live I'm france for a couple weeks on my own.

Anything I can do to increase my odds of joining?

I've been through BMQ for the Canadian Armed Forces & I'm going to start teaching myself a bit of french. What do you guys think of signing your life away for another countries political/military interests? I want to live in Europe and this seems like a good.start

Just join your own military. You'll make more $$ and won't have to speak a shit language

part of the reason I want to join them, canada has no combat missions going on right now and seems a little ironic to join a combat trade and sit on base and twidle your thumbs all fucking day.

Save yourself the misery and just go join the Kurd for a while. When you get tired of it leave with your combat experience and "sick operator skillz". If you join FFL you are going to be stuck in some bum fuck nowhere taking pop shots from Africoons and have no easy way out.

why is the ffl seen as so "last resort"?

This is an awful fucking idea. You really want to be cannon fodder on "peace-keeping" missions in Africa?

The pay is terrible, they treat you terribly, and if you want to stay in France after your term is up they retroactively tax all your earnings.

Cavalry, back then in Orange (I think they are based near Marseille now). You can find wages on the internet, but you usually get more than that, there are lots of bonuses. If you are going only because of money, don't do that. You sign your first contract for a five years, after that you can sign for 1, 2 or 5 again I think. I did my five.

You spend most of your time doing either regimental training or specialized training (sometimes with other regiments), after that if you are lucky, you get deployed. Some vacation, and training rounds again. Rinse and repeat.

>>78729085
Don't give them some prepared bullshit like that, they hear that hundred times a day. Just be direct, truthful and hones. Tell them you are looking for the military career and want to start anew in Europe. They will ask this question during the first two weeks many many times.
>>
>>78730068
Cool thanks. And then you didn't see any combat then?
>>
>>78730357
I was deployed. No wild stuff though. I just sat in my vehicle most of the time, served as a bigger taxi with guns, drove to seemingly meaningless places. Some people shot at us few times, we shot back few times too. Nothing grand, Legion got very strong presence established.

Good money though. But I loved specialized trainings, damn I loved those. Scuba diving, mountain fighting. You name it. Legion is best for this.

Little to no Arabs in the legion. I remember one Egyptian during the selection. Wanted special praying time. In the Legion. They try to join, they kick most of them during first week.

French Foreign Legion is my backup plan if my wife ever divorces me. Learn French, find a quebecer and talk to them whenever you can, you'll learn fast that way. Get fit.

From what I've heard they don't just take anybody anymore, you have to be in fighting shape when you arrive if you want a good chance of being accepted into training.
>>
>>78731968
Are you the same Czech guy who's working security for a casino now? Are there foreign legion guys working for contracting companies?
>>
>>78736253
Age is ideal, never been in military is also better than having existing military background. Fluent in Russian is great, since really big portion of the present Legion are russian-speakers.

Don't mention well-off family. If they ask, you come from a regular average family background. They are looking for the losers who will have it better in the Legion and fulfill their contract. That's why half of the Legion is from the Eastern Europe and the second half from South America.

>How much choice do you have over your regiment?
Not too much for the most, it depends on what you show during the selection and basic. If you can score your way to one of the best though, the chance you get where you want is relatively big. Worse you score, worse your chance.

>Are there many niggers?
Nope. And those who get in tend to be really great guys.

>Fuck any filthy African aids factory prostitutes ?
Sure I did. To this day I am amazed I never got sick.

Yeah, I know about few. From what I've heard ex-legionnaires are on high demand. But don't take my word for it, that's only from what I have heard.
>>
>>78738147
Hope you're doing well Czech bro. We're there any legal repercussions from your country for being gone for 5 years? Like taxes or anything like that.
>>
>>78738609
I've got somewhat huge debt from not paying taxes, but that is me being irresponsible, since it is preventable with a little help from the Legion and French offices when are you still serving. No legal issues, you can serve in any army within the NATO here.

Other than that I am doing fine, thank you for asking Americanfriend. Hope you are alright too and everything is fine there as well.
>>
>>78739100
How did your family / friends react?
Also do you have proof?
>>
>>78739100
Well but if you did not own any property and did not tell your country that you made any money, shouldn't you not owe any taxes?
My 4.83 km time is 20:14 and I can do 27 dead hang pull ups. How does that compare for most recruits?
>>
>>78736351
Answer this, Bedrich
>>
>>78739569
Family took it alright, always a bit distant in this department. When I was leaving I had my only true friend already serving there, so no big deal too. Thinking back about it, I think that this really helped - I think the most difficult part is during the first two months, when there is a moment you have to tell yourself "This is it, I am throwing my old life away right now." Hard to describe.

Proof of what?

>>78739739
I did not. But we have a different tax system here, there are two mandatory taxes you have to pay each month. I did not paid them at all for the whole time, nor I was officially unemployed during which you are excerpted from paying (but you have to be present).

>27 dead hang pull ups.
That's fucking impressive, mate. Good for you, they will instantly remember you if you show them something like that. And that is very good during selection.

Your running is fine too, however try running longer distances. When we started running in the Legion for the first time (after being accepted to the "Rouge" during selection) we started at 8km.

>>
>>78742676
I think you are pretty much ready. But be ready to very soon acknowledge, you can't just prepare for the Legion. But physically-wise, you seem in a really good shape for the Legion. When I was going in, I was much worse than you in that department.

Africa is fucking beautiful. Nature-wise, sometimes it is just pure magic and I am not a bit romantic person. But people there? Not so much. I don't know about the jungle, but all brazilian guy's I served in, they mostly loved it really much and spend quite long times praising it.
>>
>>78743474
Sorry for this kind of question, but since I imagine there many be some closet homosexuals or degenerates that were seuxally abused when they were children willing to join and probably getting it, what about rape in the legion? Ever heard any stories about someone getting raped?

I just want to walk away from things my friend. I feel as if we forget how comfortable and easy our lives are and that we have forgotten the important things in life. My favorite memory I have is that I went camping. All I had was a sleeping mat, ruck, and sleeping bag. It was summer night, but it was cold as balls for some reason. Maybe 40 F? The ground was cold, dew was soaking my sleeping bag, but it was a clear night. You could see all of the stars and the moonlight lit up my breath. I was cold, completely soaked, I was uncomfortable because I was using my ruck for a pillow, but damn I was happy. Got any stories like that?

>>
>>78745012
How's living in South Africa?
>>
>>78743917
That is a strange question indeed, man. I never heard anything, not even indication of anything like that. Today Legion is pretty modern military complex, with some specifics which make it great and effective, it is very far from the "old" Legion. And I am not in any way implying that in the old Legion there were rapes or something like that. With every ancien I have ever spoken to, they were all straight up guys without any issue remotely like this.

>>78744461
I can hear this. If you can keep this outlook after you did not slept for a last two to three days at all, got only a few meals which you had to finish under 30 seconds and you only run or walk insane distances so your feet look like blood sponges and you are so cold that guys from the south got freeze burns, then you will love the Legion. The basic is really a final destination for most of the guys, but if you can do it, it will give you great things and you will never look on your life same. Also in those moments, the guys you are with, they will become your best friends for the rest of your life to that point that any relationship back in your civil life can't even begin to compare. I really don't know how many times back then I said that I love the Legion and I don't know how many times I said I really fucking hate it. Best mistake I ever made and best love-hate relationship I ever had.

>>78746579
I must say that Christmas were a bit awkward for the first years. Not the whole day, when you had a day off and sit with your buddies and had a free beer, that is always good. But the celebration itself was sometimes a bit forced. After two years you get to know those people better (caporal-chefs and other officers mostly) and it start to be more casual and more fun.

When we are at the topic - careful with a drink there. Legion is heavy drinking, French like to celebrate and the booze is usually free there. You are not limited on how much you drink but you are expected to be able to control it, especially next morning.

How about being an old man? I am 32 and above average in shape(lift and run a lot) do I have a chance?

I read online the FFL age resrictions are from 18-40.

I am to old for most other militaries .
>>
>>78731968
Isn't it Legion tradition that you can remain anonymous though?
>>
>>78752353
Not anymore.
There was a change in like 2009.
Now it's a sub-category of the french army and you can't change name when entering, except exceptional circumstances.
>>
>>78752069
They do prefer younger
But being fit is number one and i mean cardio no one gives a fuck how much you can lift solidering is about endurance so train long distance, commando run (with 10+kgs, lots of pack marches and swimming also they test pull ups, rope climbing and youll do a obstical course called parcours du combatant so you still need some upper body
>>
>>78727843
>Don't forget to run a lot and shut the fuck up.
>Be prepared for the worst fucking suck in your life
Some of the best advice any new recruit could get.
>>
You're going to have to learn to kill and die on the flip of a switch, like you do when crossing the road

Seriously the FFL has some nasty sorts in it
>>
>>78752693
Wrong they give you a fake name even before youre through aurbagne selecton
And you have to apply to get real name back almost everone does because you cant use your passport without your real name
>>
>>78753007
>Wrong they give you a fake name
Maybe when you were part of it, sure.

Not anymore.

Switzerland got a extra-budget, to hold the french foreign legion for some hundreds of years.
>>
>>78753791
Tradition is a big one
There is a real emphasis on the how everyone is from different backgrounds and country its in alot of the traditions and legion chants and its in the code of honor
Also for alot of countrys frence is really easy for them to learn even from scratch like eastern block and latinos would pick it up very very quickly

I did 4 years as a grunt in the Marines (2 pumps to helmand province) and have been seriously considering this. Ever since I got out 3 years ago I have found nothing about civilian life that interests me. I miss being cold wet and miserable. I miss almost everything about combat. I want to get back in the fight while I still have some fighting years in me(I'm only 25). I'm still in decent shape (3 mile run in 21:30-22:00 and 10-12 pull-ups).

Will my prior military experience help or hurt me? How are combat vets treated by the legion? Any tips for a prior service guy? I am drawing disability from the U.S. govt for hearing loss and tinnitus, should I come clean about this to them or should I hide it?
>>
>>78754868
why don't you go back as a marine?
>>

>I am drawing disability from the U.S. govt for hearing loss and tinnitus, should I come clean about this to them or should I hide it?

From what I know from when I lived in France is that the service that choose to recruit you or not know everything. They're not called the Gestapo for nothing, and you shouldn't really lie to them.

I can't imagine joining the army of a foreign power being good for your vet benefits.

Underrated.

Politicians(lead by Obama) are neutering our military. It was just starting when I joined in 2009 and by the time my first enlistment was over in 2013 it was too far gone to be saved and I wanted no part of it anymore. Also, like the Canadian earlier in the thread mentioned, I do not want to serve in a force during peacetime. Combat deployments were ending for basic grunt units in 2013 when I got out. On my second deployment in 2012 the roles were already shifting from fighting to just occupying land and we only got shot at once in 7 months. Compared to my first deployment in which we would take contact almost daily, it was extremely boring. There is nothing left to do as a grunt Marine these days other than sit on your ass cleaning weapons and maybe go float around on a Navy ship for a while. There is no more war.

What appeals to me so much about the
legion is that they are deployed often and constantly close to combat. I want to get back in the fight so badly. It's the only thing in my life that I truly excelled at and felt a passion for. The Legion seems to give me the best odds of getting there. There is always a shithole African country that is in a state of civil war or anarchy.
>>
>>78728352
Please please please please.
It is so fucking boring!
Time for the last great adventure.
>>
>>78755673

I don't give a shit about the benefits and I would gladly forfeit them if it meant getting into the legion. I am more worried about the legion considering me unfit for duty because of my ears.
>>
>>78754868
Honest opinion?
Dont do it
Before I joined the FFL I did 4 years RNZIR and was deeply disappointed with the legion because of the comparison with a "anglo saxon" army and I knew a few marines in the legion who thought the exact same thing.
The gear isnt overly bad but its pretty shit even the new stuff (they issue you nivea face creme and brut aftershave i shit you not) and the famas is a piece of shit and so is the mac 50 (single stack 9mm wtf).
But the worst is the training its just so shit I cant fit everything I think about it here but the legions TTP's and SOP's are fucked and lazy as and WILL conflict with what you have learned.
BUT the absolute worst is having to put up with and living with piece of shit ruskis fuck I hate russians, bulgarians, belarus cunts, ukrainians are shit heads and FUCK MOLDOVA YOU ARE THE WORST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD FUCK OFFF!!!!! these people will steal from you will talk shit about you will take food of your plate while still eating will try get in fights with you and are just the worst people ever africans are bro tier compared to fucking ruskies
>>
>>78754868

any good French Legionaries ,has to know several cooking Recipes on How to prepare a good Barbeque with Cat Meat ,from scratch
>>
>>78758176
OK so the fitness test of the FFL are
The "cooper test"
which is were you run around a 400m track as many times as you can in 12 mins 2800m is the min to get posted to a reg
Rope climb 5m using just your arms is the standard and though I dont think its required anymore it will go towards ultimate selection
Passing the parcours d' obstacles or parcours du combatant which is 20 obstacles back to back most of it is very easy but there a few real basterds like the table irlandise which as fucked over alot of people and you have to do it in under 5 mins can be fairly difficult for some people to do because of like of upperbody on some of the real cunt obs
A commando run is needed which is 8000m with 11+kg and if your XO is a cunt then gas mask aswell that nearly killed some dudes
And last is swimming is needed aswell the test is swim 200m then swim under water for 10 secs

Thats to get into reg to get into selection is beep test and pull ups these days and your just compared with all other volunteers
>>
when you first sign up, does any of the legion stay in france?
Sort of like a national guard?
>>
>>78758176

>>78760163
The legion is deployed just like their national army I know 2 rep is doing alot of opereation sentinelle in paris your deployments matter alot on your reg posting but africa is a givin

Met a guy who served at Krav Maga training. Staring at the floor, unable to look people in the eyes, had some agression issues. FFLfucked him up good.
>>
>>78760451
What are things that will automatically disqualify you from joining, besides being in poor shape?
Is it a problem if you have glasses ?
>>
>>78762094
How do you like Krav Maga ?
Is it just a meme or do you really profit from it ?
>>
>>78725269
What country is that flag
>>
>>78762917
Just hover with your mouse over it.
(Qatar)
>>
>>78762659
Depends on a trainer. It's not a meme, it teaches how to fight on the street. It's not a sporty thing like karate or smth like that. For example I learned how to kick a person lying on the ground efficiently.
>>
>>78762379
no glasses are ok
disqualify things i know of are: drugs (zero tolorence)
any metal in your body from surgery and I mean ANY metal even small screws can ruin your chance
really bad teeth will disqualify you
No homosexuals its not official or written down (i dont think) but if the gestapo thinks your gay then you got no luck
>>
>>78763088
Thanks.
Did you have to make use of it in the past and if so how did you perform (looking back at it)?
>>
>>78763440
Thanks.
Did you know some guys who had a major surgery and still were able to join?
(Had an operation on my left knee because some fuck kicked me down the stairs from behind. Metal is all gone but you can see that there was a surgery)
>>
>>78764018
yes i did
If you got no metal and you think your knee is back to mil spec then c'est bon
>>
>>78764253
