Gibraltar isnt just a UK island, but it's an important base for NATO in the Mediterranean.
Spanish aggression towards Gibraltar would see French tanks lined up at the border and the massive US naval garrisons in Spain suddenly turning their guns towards spain. Also Italy, and a couple us carriers.
Spain would cause article 5 to be enacted against themselves. The British have a right to defend their territory, but the Spanish do not have a right to be that way over Gibraltar.
Even the Spanish aren't stupid enough to do that. NATO article 5 supercedes any eu agreement or will of their country unless they back out of NATO entirely.
