we loved him. he was on our side on most issues. he was a neighbor of mine in DC. I met him once, very briefly, on the street, while waiting to cross the road. I didn't want to intrude on his space but it was obvious who he was and that I was a fan like many other locals. It was in the morning and he was drunk. He was polite, friendly enough, and decent. The whole encounter lasted 20 - 25 seconds tops. Now that he's gone, I don't fault him for smoking and drinking. But, it likely contributed to the cancer that took him from us all to early.
