As a non-libertarian, I would agree that taxation is theft. However, I don't think that there is a suitable alternative. Taxes, especially federal taxes, should be used for the few things that the free market cannot provide, namely roads, national defense, and courts. Taxation for the purpose of welfare is truly a robin-hood type theft wherein you steal from the rich to give to the poor. Taxes should be used as sparingly as possible, and I think just acknowledging that whatever is taxed is taken at gunpoint might make people less inclined to tax excessively.
