In WW1 I imagine it had something to do with the sheer shock of modern warfare with tanks, planes, airburst artillery, gas and 19th century infantry tactics for the first 2-3 years of conflict untill someone finally figured out how to break the stalemate.
Imagine never having seen a flying machine, let alone one that tried to kill you. Having grown up with no TV or anything that braced you for the concepts of tanks.
We had quite a few danish people in the german army in TGW - From their memories they never talked about the war, never. Not even to wives before the end of their lives they would maybe tell their story. They simply became alcoholics to forget (but still able to work and support family since they had been hardened the fuck up) - Even after WW2 when many danes spoke about the war they didn't mean WW2.
For WW2 I imagine the shellshock cases were fewer in numbers but I have no idea if that is true. Treatment would have been better though, so maybe there is that.

I was actually reading studies about soldiers earlier that shows that "hardiness" is actually more of a psychological quality than a personality type and that it comes in quantities. The more "hardiness" you have the more you feel that situations are in your power, therefore you bounce back faster and handle stress better. That specifically refers to locus of control, which comes in both internal and external flavors. Those with an internal locus believe that they shape the world around them and that their actions have weight, whereas those with an external locus of control believe that nothing they do matters and that the environment shapes them. Take someone with an external locus and low hardiness score and throw them into a war and no small wonder they snap. I actually have this hypothesis that the reason that studies show that Conservatives are more physically fit than Liberals is because being physically strong nurtures self confidence, which in turn increases hardiness and provides one with a inwards locus of control, which in turn relates better to the Conservative mindset.
