Well, during the war the Japs followed the Brit model of colonialism, where they recruited and trained nationalists. The idea being that you control them, but if you are invaded, they will continue fighting the invaders on their own.
These were the guys we were fighting in the Police Actions. We were winning, but you faggots wanted to have a nice,docile Europe and wanted to expand your sphere of influence to Euro colonies. So you basically forced us to give up the fight. There were two dominant factions within the nationalists: The commies and the islamists.
Eventually the islamists booted out the commies with loads of torture and mass murder, no doubt with American support, and they've ruled Indonesia ever since. In recent years, it has been gradually becoming more islamic, and thus more of an enemy of the West.
