When the best case scenario is that you live until your body gives out on you and everything and everyone you ever knew or cared about is lost when your meaningless existence is wiped out, its hard to be motivated to put the effort into doing anything. It makes working towards goals feel meaningless. Trying to learn a new instrument? You could get hit by a truck tomorrow and all that time and effort would have been wasted. You could get cancer or any number of other illnesses and again its all wasted. No matter what, in 80 or so years it'll all be lost.

I prefer Camus's absurdism to nihilism but its basically what I am. I find it to be freeing but totally understand where people are coming from who are afraid to a lack of meaning and afterlife. Afterlife is a nice carrot to chase after, but after my brother died it was easier for me to come to terms with.

I shift back and forth. If anything I'm a pragmatic nihilist. I use my lack of caring and oddly productive priorities as fuel for my binges of knowledge acquisition and success. Taking larger risks has yielded larger outcomes for me, and only because there has always been an aspect of uncaring for morals or in material success or general life circumstances in the immediate sense.
